2024 fashion trends revealed including the ‘IT’ print, new style of jeans and bold colour of tights we should be wearing

Years from now, a new generation will want to dress like we did in 2023.

But as for how we are going to be dressing this year – minimalism seems to be making way for bold prints and bright colours, with a sprinkling of ‘grandpa core’.

Leopard print is never truly out of fashion and this year it is said to be the ‘IT’ trend.

But the age-old question always arises when leopard print becomes back around – is it tacky or stylish?

And if you’re someone who has curated a minimalist wardrobe over the past few seasons, adding this daring print can be daunting.

For anyone not ready to take the plunge and wear a full leopard print look, another approach to the trend is styling your outfit with leopard accessories.

Think large tote bags or funky footwear – like Adidas’s collaboration with Wales Bonner which included a limited edition pair of Sambas in leopard print.

But if you want to master the all-leopard look, fashion content creator Sophie Cohen, 25 explained how the print can make you feel “confident, fabulous, sexy and glamorous”.

Slim fit jeans

According to Vogue, every year brings a new denim silhouette that “rises to the top”.

Last year, instead of a new jean width or length, “denim skirts took over the streets” bringing nostalgia to some fashionistas.

In 2024 however, gone are the wide-leg and bell-bottom jeans – they’ve joined skinny jeans as a thing of the past.

Instead, it’s all about slim-fit jeans.

Notoriously worn by men, the slim-fit jean is the must-have style for women this year.

As for what defines the shape of a slim-fit jean, they are denim trousers that are not as tight as the skinny jean.

They have larger leg openings and don’t cling around the angle, with some designs having a tapered leg.

Slim-fit jeans can be difficult for some curvy women to wear as not every pair will have stretch in to take into account hips and thighs, and they can also gap around the waist.

Button cardigans

Towards the end of last year, Pinterest’s annual future-gazing report had “eclectic grandpa” at the top of its list, and “grandpa style” and “grandpa core” were up 60 and 65 percent respectively as a key search term.

It appears fashion fans of all ages and genders are said to be taking style inspiration fro older generations in 2024.

And button-down cardigans are just one statement piece said to be everywhere this year.

According to The Times, the cardigan is “the new velvet jacket” that’s ideal for going out.

Red was a trending colour for much of 2023 and it’s not going anywhere this year with red tights set to dominate.

But red tights is not a new trend – in fact, Gossip Girl fans might remember Blair Waldorf, the leading character, sporting red tights throughout the iconic show.

Despite red tights being popular on the runway, styling them for casual or going out can be challenging.

According to stylists, the key to mastering red tights is wearing an all-black outfit.

Erin Eagle, a stylist and the founder of A Style Set told Business Insider: “A cherry-red pair of tights with an oversized black blazer, miniskirt, and black heels [makes for an elevated look].”

But if bright red legs feel “too daring”, ease into it with a pair of red socks and loafers.

Stylist Liz Teich added this would be “still on trend but more subtle than the look-at-me red tights”.

If red tights are not your thing, then fear not, “interesting tights” are also on trend.

Mui Mui – the hottest brand of 2023 according to Vogue – showcased sheer stockings pulled up over cardigan hems, whilst lacey, floral tights were also a hit.

At the British Fashion Awards in early December, singer Sam Smith sported black tights and sky-high boots, while Maya Jama wore white stockings as part of a look by Dolce & Gabbana.

Burberry’s tartan tights have also become a cult item after being spotted on models Jourdan Dunn and Iris Law.

To add to this, the mass market is following suit with John Lewis reporting sales of colour tights up 167 percent year-on-year.
