Katie Hopkins has sparked outcry after she went on a ‘cruel’ rant about grieving TV presenter Kate Garraway.

The controversial 48-year-old – who was previously banned from Twitter for breaching its rules on ‘abuse and harmful contact’ – took to social media in the wake of Derek Draper’s death aged 56.

While Kate has received an outpouring of sympathy since Draper’s death, Hopkins has taken to social media to mock her.

Talking to the camera on Instagram, Hopkins drank from a large glass of red wine and cackled to herself as she joked about the idea of widow Kate making a documentary after Draper’s death.

‘8.30pm tonight, there’s a documentary on the TV that you need to watch. It’s a Kate Garraway documentary, so it’s important I finish on time for you tonight. And it’s, um, Kate Garraway: Life After Derek. Yep,’ Katie said, sarcastically, before taking a swig of wine and cackling into the camera.

‘There’s also a book she’s releasing to go with the documentary, Life After Derek,’ she joked, adding savagely: ‘He’s only been dead a week.’

The author and former political advisor was hospitalised last month after suffering a ‘huge heart attack’, and has been requiring full-time care since contracting Covid in 2020.

‘I tell you, this is where I get such a bo***cking,’ she continued, predicting what would happen on publishing the video, as she said: ‘If I repost this or whatever I’m supposed to do with these things, people will go, “That is a line. That crosses the line. How are you laughing? She just lost her husband, how dare you. That crosses the line.”

‘Or the other thing people would say is, “You should be ashamed of yourself. You should be ashamed.”‘

Well, she was right. Even fans of Hopkins turned on her. The ones who agreed with Hopkins only seemed to do so because they genuinely thought Kate did have a documentary coming out this week called Life After Derek.

But this was all Hopkins’ imagination, as she amused herself over what could be next for Kate, who is taking a break from work commitments after the heartbreaking announcement.

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate, 56, announced the news her husband of 17 years Derek had died earlier this month.

He suffered a cardiac arrest in December after complications arose from contracting Covid back in March 2020, and died on January 5 while holding Kate’s hand.

Since Draper’s health declined, Kate has been praised for her two documentaries – Finding Derek and Caring for Derek – in which the family candidly opened up about their struggles, raising awareness for carers and the long-term effects of Covid in the process.

The Smooth Radio presenter previously explained on social media her reason for sharing their personal story with the world.

‘The reason we made the documentary was to highlight carers, professional carers, and carers who are doing it for love and the tough challenges that that involves,’ she said.

So Hopkins’ fans weren’t impressed at the video.

‘You’re usually so funny but this is cruel,’ wrote Instagram user @sharon_rowlands, while @daisyduke5695 said: ‘Oh katie! That’s a bit close to the bone😮.’

‘Pretty sad that someone could laugh at that very sad situation, don’t get it,’ wrote @kathleen_buchan1.

Others were at a loss too, as @lara_miriam_greaves wrote: ‘I don’t understand the hate. She looked after him throughout his illness and now he’s dead. What has she done to warrant any hate. It’s a sad time for the family.’

‘Too far,’ agreed @maria_sealey who went on to write: ‘There are two kids who have lost their dad here. Always admired your honesty but this video is horrible. And I’m shocked at the amount of vile followers you have in the comments.’

‘I normally laugh at your comments, you have crossed the line, I hope you do not have a loss in your family,’ added @bobbiethornton9.

Draper and Kate shared two children: daughter Darcey, 17, and son Billy, 14.

Former Apprentice contestant Hopkins was reinstated on X, formerly Twitter, in November after Elon Musk’s takeover.

She previously came under fire for comparing refugees to cockroaches, saying dementia sufferers shouldn’t be ‘blocking beds’ in hospitals, and criticising mothers for breastfeeding in public.

Famously, she also suggested that people shouldn’t name their children after places – like Brooklyn, and London – but failed to recognise her own child is called India…
