Sarah Snook has revealed an unnamed film producer once body shamed her for eating a small piece of cake.

The Succession star, whose role in the HBO drama recently earned her a Golden Globe award, has recalled the inappropriate moment early in her career when an executive saw her snacking on some dessert during a production break and reacted badly.

‘One particular day, I had the tiniest bit of chocolate cake,’ she recalled, claiming the producer berated her in front of the cast and crew.

She added to the Sunday Times: ‘All the while I am dying inside.’

The 36-year-old actress – who didn’t name the project in question – noted that the incident came after she had landed the role and was told by the casting director to lose weight to improve her ‘marketability’.

She alleged being told: ‘We don’t really want you because you’re a nobody, but the director and the writer think you’re good for the role.

‘So, what we’ll do is change all of you so that you’re marketable: We’ll whiten your teeth, darken your hair, we’ll give you a personal trainer so you can lose weight and look the part.’

Sarah revealed she followed the instructions, as at the time she believed it was the one path to success.

She thought: ‘In order for me to be successful, I have to be all the things that aren’t me.’

The 36-year-old star – whose career began with 2009’s All Saints – landed the part of Siobhan Roy in Succession in 2018, two years after appearing in Black Mirror episode Men Against Fire, and she has described the role as life changing.

Accepting her prize at the Golden Globes earlier this month, she said: ‘This show, it’s changed my life.’

After thanking the rest of the cast and crew, she added in her speech: ‘This was a team effort, it was always that was what made the show amazing.’

Sarah, who is also in the running for an Emmy Award at tonight’s ceremony, told The Times she hopes that her award season success is proving that she is a ‘somebody’ and her naysayers were wrong.
