I use ‘snow washing’ to clean gross old rugs – it gets rid of bad smells too, but it only works at a certain temperature
A WOMAN with an old-school mindset has shared how she uses her historic “snow washing” method to clean dirty rugs.
Not only does it get rid of bad smells, but there is a specific temperature it needs to be at for the trick to work.

Daniella (@casajanara) is a lover of all things vintage, history, architecture, and design.
She loves learning about and sharing old traditions that have been passed down over time.
She showed viewers how she used snow to wash her old, gross, and dirty rugs in a TikTok video.
Daniella spoke over the clip of herself in a wintry setting outside as she explained what she was doing in the visual.
“This is a process called snow washing, and it is a method of cleaning that people have been using for hundreds if not thousands of years,” she said.
It’s still used to this day in colder climates where there’s snow.
She wouldn’t recommend it if you have a deep set stain or smell, but it’s great for when you’re at home and on a budget.
“You’re gonna wanna do this when it’s 25 degrees Fahrenheit or below. That way the snow is gonna be the right texture. It’s not gonna be that wet, tacky snow,” she explained.
Before you do anything, she said you’re going to want to bring the items outside and leave them there for an hour, so it acclimates to the temperature.
In the video, she laid it flat on the show and intensely beat it with a broom.
As a result, oil, dirt, and similar grime will freeze and contract, so that when you’re beating it, it will fall off into the snow.
“You don’t want to put something warm from your house on cold snow and cause it to melt. That way it’ll get wet,” she cautioned.
Viewers were interested in learning more about the cleaning hack and offered their own opinions.
“I’ve never seen this before, but it makes sense. Gotta get things clean even in winter,” one commented.
“You just slapping the ground with the broom in the back is sending me,” another added.
“We did this every winter as kids. It was fun. You can scrub and rub it with snow too,” a TikTok user wrote.
“I have a husky mix, he “bathes” himself in the snow (lays on his back and wiggles in the snow), but only when it’s way below freezing. Thought he was just playing, but it all makes sense,” another said.
