A powerful tribute to Matthew Perry at last night’s Emmy Awards has left Friends fans in floods of tears.

In October 2023, the Chandler Bing star died at the age of 54, after being found ‘unresponsive’ in the pool at his home.

There has been an outpouring of grief from fans across the globe in the months since, with his co-stars from the sitcom Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow expressing their devastation in heartbreaking tributes.

On Sunday January 15 2024, the Emmys took place in Los Angeles, with some of the top winners of the night including the talent behind Succession, The Bear and Beef.

During the night, there was an in memoriam segment honouring the people from the industry who had died in the past year, including Lance Reddick, Stephen ‘Twitch’ Boss, Angus Cloud and Angela Lansbury.

As Charlie Puth performed on the piano, the music transitioned to the theme song from Friends – I’ll Be There For You – as Perry’s picture appeared on the screen.

The image then transitioned to show his face among a large group of entertainment titans who had died, and fans watching at home could barely cope with the emotional moment.

‘Lost it when Matthew Perry came on and they were singing “I’ll Be There For You.” 😭😭,’ an X user called Jennifer wrote.

‘I was not ready for Matthew Perry at the end 😩,’ said Marie, while Erika added: ‘The loss of Matthew Perry still makes me cry. In case anyone was wondering.’

Another user called Les said that the beautiful tribute ‘really took me out’, as Jess shared: ‘It’s still so wild to see Matthew Perry be a part of a memorial tribute. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to hear that theme song the same way 😔.’

One user who goes by the handle @cosmicveng said: ‘The #Emmys honoring Matthew Perry like that 😭😭😭😭😭 He will always be there for us 🙏🏻🕊.’
