If you pre-ordered The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered digitally at full price when you already own the PS4 version, Sony has some good news.

Moreso than any other console generation, the move from PlayStation 4/Xbox One to the PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X has been a far slower, and less clear-cut, transition.

As such, we’ve seen far more upgraded remasters of old titles, especially from Sony – with director’s cuts and remasters of Death Stranding and Ghost Of Tsushima, and collections like Uncharted: Legacy Of Thieves.

For those who purchased these titles on PlayStation 4, Sony has largely normalised a £10 upgrade path to access the PlayStation 5 version – but the messaging, and where to access the upgrade, isn’t always made clear.

This seems to have happened for some players who pre-ordered The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered, with Sony now offering refunds to anyone who pre-ordered the digital version of the PS5 edition at full price (£44.99) if they already have the PlayStation 4 version.

As noted by some on Twitter, a message from Sony is showing up on PlayStation 5 for affected players: ‘As an owner of the PS4 digital version of The Last Of Us Part 2, a digital upgrade to the PS5 digital version will be available at a deeply discounted price on launch day.’

‘We don’t want you to lose out on that opportunity so, as a gesture of good will, we have refunded your purchase for the pre-order of the PS5 version of The Last Of Us Part II Remastered so that you may purchase the digital upgrade on launch day. Rest assured that by purchasing the digital upgrade, you will also receive any pre-order bonuses included in your original pre-order.’

To access the upgrade, players who already own The Last Of Us Part 2 on PlayStation 4 have to navigate to the game’s hub page on PlayStation 5, either on the PlayStation Store or where you have it installed.

If you then click on the three-dot button, the upgrade option should be available there. If you own a physical PlayStation 4 copy, the same applies but you have to insert the disc whenever you want to play the remaster.

Along with upgraded visuals, The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered features three Lost Levels with commentary, a free play mode for Ellie’s guitar, and a new roguelike survival mode called No Return. This comes after a PlayStation 5 remake of the original game, which was released in 2022 – ahead of the HBO TV series.

Sony has a habit of not advertising its upgrades properly, which has created problems like this in the past, were people didn’t realise they could get such a significant discount. It is standard for all new cross-gen games though, so always look out for it if you’re thinking of buying one.
