The official cause of death of Dana Carvey’s son Dex Carvey has been confirmed months after it was announced that he had died at the age of 32.

In November last year, the Wayne’s World star released a joint statement with his wife Paula Zwagerman sharing that his family had ‘suffered a terrible tragedy’ after his ‘beloved son’ had died.

‘Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things – music, art, film making, comedy – and pursued all of them passionately,’ the 68-year-old wrote at the time.

‘It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life. And when you were with him, you loved life too. He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend, Kaylee.’

Carvey described his late son as a ‘beautiful person’, saying that his handmade birthday cards were a ‘treasure’, and writing that their family ‘will miss him forever’.

In a report obtained by People, it has been officially confirmed that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that Dex died from an accidental drug overdose.

According to the publication, fentanyl, ketamine and cocaine was found in his system at the time of his death.

In the statement that Carvey and Zwagerman released announcing their son’s death, they shared that Dex had died from an accidental overdose.

The message concluded with a heartfelt call to ‘anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction’.

‘You are in our hearts and prayers. Dana & Paula,’ they wrote.

Carvey shared a joyful picture of himself with Dex on Instagram, honouring a beautiful memory that he had with his son.

‘Dex and me working together. What a joy,’ he said in the caption.

Following the outpouring of support that Carvey and his family received, he released another statement expressing his gratitude.

‘This is just to say thank you,’ he wrote in November last year.

‘My wife and I have been overwhelmed by your love, your personal stories, your compassion.

‘We received so many beautiful messages from people who knew Dex. These touched us more than we could ever express in words.’

The actor continued: ‘I will be taking a break from work and social media – trying to figure out what life looks like now that we are a family of 3. We will heal the best we can and carry on.

‘Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way. Much love, Dana.’
