An Australian TV star who collapsed while filming The Amazing Race has revealed there were fears he might die.
Last year Grant Denyer, best known for hosting shows like Family Feud, Dancing with the Stars and the upcoming Deal or No Deal reboot, suffered a medical emergency as cameras were rolling for the reality series.
At the time, Grant and his wife Chezzi were in India when he was seen lying on the ground looking severely unwell after competing in a dance challenge.
He appeared dehydrated and disorientated after undertaking the task in the intense humidity, but he’s now said things were much more serious than initially shared.
‘In television land, we’re often guilty of dialling a lot of moments up in drama,’ he explained.
‘In this one, I think we actually dialled it down a little bit, because it was pretty confronting.’

He said that he ended up ‘convulsing on the floor’ and that the producer holding him said he was ‘dropping in and out of consciousness’ and she’d been afraid he was going to die.
‘She was yelling at me to stay with her, stay with her,’ he added when speaking to News.com.au.
‘I know that there were several occasions there that she thought that I was slipping away permanently. So, from what we know now about severe heat stroke, we were probably 10 minutes away from a very severe outcome.
‘It was a lot … It was a real lot.’
After the medical emergency, the couple were eliminated from the series due to his health, as well as the fact they’d fallen far behind the other teams.

Although he appeared to have recovered on screen and was seen sitting up and talking with medics, he then spent the following two months recovering.
Grant said the incident was ‘scary’ and it then took him seven weeks to feel better after struggling to walk and sleep.
He was then concerned he might be left with ‘permanent damage’ as he wasn’t able to ‘finish sentences or remember things’.
‘My system was sort of in a fight-or-flight mode and we couldn’t quite get it out of it,’ he recalled.
However, after a course of medication he started feeling like himself again and is now back to normal.

On the series, viewers saw Chezzi asking her husband if he needed to sit down after he appeared like he was going to faint.
Soon after she was heard screaming as the screen faded to black.
Medics were brought inside to an air-conditioned room where Grant lay on his side on the floor, with his face looking pale.
In a worldwide Amazing Race first, the series ended with three teams winning the show, with Cody Simpson’s mum and sister Angie and Alli, TV host Darren McMullen and his nephew Tristan Dougan and former Wiggle Emma Watkins and her sister Hayley all agreeing to step on the Finish Line mat together to split the grand prize for each team’s charity.
The Amazing Race airs on Channel 10 in Australia.
