The new Assassin’s Creed set in Japan is definitely out this year, with major reveals rumoured for the spring and summer.
It’s now over three years since Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and while last year’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage went down well with most fans – with its smaller scale, back to basics approach – it wasn’t a mainline entry.
The next one of those is what is currently only known by the codename Assassin’s Creed Red, and which is set in Feudal Japan and allows for a ‘very powerful shinobi fantasy.’
Officially that’s all we know about the game, but according to a Ubisoft exec on LinkedIn it’s going to be the ‘biggest blockbuster of 2024’.
That’s the first time that anyone from Ubisoft has confirmed the game is out this year and while it’s possible Arisa Lagunzad made a mistake, you’d think the person in charge of Business Development & Brand Partnership would know when their next big game is coming out.
They’re not the only source to suggest the game is out this year though, and while the second source is an unnamed content creator, their claims are not outlandish: a world premier trailer in May, a gameplay showcase (at a Ubisoft Forward event) in July, and the actual release in November.
That all seems perfectly believable, although there’s no mention of Assassin’s Creed Infinity, the mysterious live service game hub that’s supposed to link all forthcoming titles together, but which Ubisoft has still yet to explain properly.
Red was supposed to be the first game to use Infinity, but whether those plans have changed or not is unclear.

The game has been shrouded in an unusual amount of secrecy for the series, with the fact that it’s still only known by its codename being peculiar in itself.
According to long standing rumours, the game will feature two playable characters, one a female ninja and the other a black samurai, inspired by the historical figure Yasuke.
None of that is confirmed though and the only trailer that’s ever been released is the extremely brief teaser below.
Although there is a Sony State of Play showcase on Wednesday there’s no suggestion that Assassin’s Creed will be featured, which means that it probably will be a good few months till we get any more official information.
