An embarrassing mistake saw lower-rated players included in a faulty Ultimate Team pack in EA Sports FC 24, and fans are far from impressed.

Microtransactions remain one of the most controversial aspects of video games and EA Sports FC (formerly known as FIFA) is full of them.

EA Sports FC 24 offers packs you can buy with real money, in which you can get new players for the game’s online Ultimate Team mode. These aren’t cheap, and a £30 pack caused particular outrage last year.

More recently, however, EA advertised a pack for players rated 87 and above, but which fans discovered had players as low as 86 in it.

It wasn’t long after that, that fans, quite rightly, started complaining and the EA Sports FC communications account on Twitter admitted that the pack was faulty.

EA confirmed that players were getting lower rated players in the 87+ Base/ Triple Threat/ UCL & UWCL Heroes Player Pick (x3) pack, and later revealed that players who got 86 rated players in the pack would be compensated.

So if you got a 86 rated player in that particular pack, EA will message you in the game ‘with the correct Player Item in the coming days.’

It hasn’t been as simple as that, though, as EA had to disable its popular Squad Building Challenge feature in Ultimate Team, which lets you build a squad in a certain amount of time for a reward, like a player pack.

This meant that nobody could progress their challenges for a time, while EA was fixing the problem, and some fans were not impressed.

EA hasn’t said exactly what the compensation will be, or when it’ll happen, but affected fans can probably expect a genuine 87+ pack in their messages at some point soon.

It’s also not clear if the affected fans will get to keep the 86 rated players they unpacked, or if EA will compensate with a swap for a new player.

Either way it’s an issue that has rubbed players the wrong way, especially as they now have to keep checking up to make sure they get their compensation.
