Will Ellie return for a potential Part 3? (Picture: Sony)
The Last Of Us Part 3 has been all but confirmed by Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann, but it won’t be out for years.
While developer Naughty Dog has always been cagey about whether The Last Of Us Part 3 will ever happen, the success of the TV show transformed it from a possibility to a certanity.
Co-creator Neil Druckmann has now confirmed he has an idea in mind for what the game could be, which in turn implies it’s not yet in full production.
In the behind the scenes documentary Grounded 2: Making The Last Of Us Part 2, Druckmann teased the future of the franchise and said he had a ‘concept’ for a third chapter that is ‘as exciting’ as the prior entries.
Speaking about a potential third game at the end of the documentary, Druckmann said: ‘I’ve been thinking, is there a concept there? And for now years, I’ve not been able to find that concept. But recently, that’s changed.
‘I don’t have a story but I do have that concept, that to me is as exciting as [Part 1] and as exciting as [Part 2]. It’s its own thing, and yet it has this through line for all three. It does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to the story.’
Druckmann also clarifed comments he made back in 2021, where he said he had an ‘outline for a story’ that takes place after The Last Of Us Part 2. While it was suggested this was for a potential part three, the developer explained that this was actually a story about Joel’s younger brother Tommy.

‘It was always a small story, it was never a full title’ Druckmann said regarding the Tommy outline, which was shelved due to other priorities at the studio.
He added: ‘I still believe one day it will see the light of day. I don’t know if it will be a game or a show.’
Considering The Last Of Us Part 2 was in development for around six years from 2014, and that only a baseline concept for a sequel exists, a potential part three likely won’t materialise for years to come, probably at least four or five. That in turn means it might end up as a PlayStation 6 title.
The wording of ‘one more chapter’ also suggests this would be the last entry in the series, but then creators imply that a lot about successful franchises that publishers are less willing to see end.
If we’re years away from a third instalment, Naughty Dog is perhaps banking on the HBO TV adaptation to keep interest in the franchise going. Filming on the second season is slated to begin this month, which will only adapt a portion of The Last Of Us Part 2.
