Back to the start for Uncharted? (Picture: Sony)
New evidence suggests a remake of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was in development at Naughty Dog, although it’s unclear if it still is.
After the recently released The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered, developer Naughty Dog might still not be finished pumping out new versions of old games.
While there’s been rumours of a new Uncharted in development at another studio, possibly Sony Bend, it seems the original creators could be – or at least, were – considering doing a remake of the first game in the series.
The rumour was first circulated by insiders Nick Baker and Jon Clarke, who said they had both received ‘evidence’ that Sony is working on a ‘ground up’ remake of 2007’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.
Clarke, however, noted that he received ‘additional detail’ to suggest ‘this was quite old, I’m talking a number of years’.
Baker clarified: ‘What we both saw, it doesn’t necessarily mean this is 100% happening… but what we saw does seem to indicate that, at the very least it was strongly being considered.’
A wrinkle in this rumour is the release of the Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection from 2015, which includes the first three games and is backwards compatible on PlayStation 5. ‘That’s why we’re not 100% certain this is definitely happening for sure,’ Baker added in reference to the collection.
After the podcast was released, Naughty Dog modder and dataminer Speclizer claimed all the rumours stemmed from their research into a 2020 build of The Last Of Us Part 2 that they ‘shared privately’ with others.
Speclizer claims there are ‘hundreds of references to Uncharted 1’ in the game’s files, which ‘may or may not be a cancelled project’. The modder also claims they found ‘hundreds’ of references to The Last Of Us Part 1 remaster in the same files, labelled ‘t1x’, ‘but thought nothing of it’ until that game was officially announced.
Naughty Dog has released a lot of revised versions of older games in recent years, including a full remake The Last Of Us Part 1, The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered, and Uncharted: Legacy Of Thieves Collection. As such, a remake of the first Uncharted certainly would be in step with the studio’s recent track record.
While the previous Uncharted collection does potentially negate the need for Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune on modern consoles, it is certainly the entry most in need of a glow up – with less polished graphics and rougher gameplay in comparison to its acclaimed sequels.
Unlike remasters, remakes take years to make, as they’re essentially new games, so the references being old doesn’t necessarily mean the idea has been abanonded.
On the other hand, the people in charge of Naughty Dog now are very different compared to 2007, when Amy Hennig was the director of the series.
Uncharted 4 was the only game that The Last Of Us creator Neil Druckmann was director on and that had a notably more serious tone – before Naughty Dog announced they were no longer interested in making new entries in the series.
That alone is reason to imagine that Naughty Dog is no longer involved in a remake, in anything other than a supervisory role.
Much like The Last Of Us though, the near future of Uncharted might be in Hollywood productions – with a sequel to 2022’s successful (at least, financially)Uncharted film starring Tom Holland believed to be in the works.
