Tiësto has pulled out of his Super Bowl performance due to a family emergency.

The DJ took to social media to tell fans that although it was a tough decision, ‘family always comes first’.

‘Me and my team have been preparing something truly special for months, but a personal family emergency is forcing me to return home Sunday morning,’ he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

‘It was a tough decision to miss the game, but family always comes first. Thank you to the @NFL for the collaboration and looking forward to working with them to deliver something incredible together in the future!’

The 55-year-old was set to perform during the breaks between gameplay as the Kansas City Chiefs took on the San Francisco 49ers for the NFL championship, with some of it being televised.

This would have marked the first time a DJ played the full game, with music stars including DJ Khaled and Zedd previously spinning the decks in pre-game only. It has not been announced if there will be a replacement for the Las Vegas sporting event.

Usher will be playing the legendary halftime slot on Sunday and has teased what he has planned.

During a press conference for the Apple Music Super Bowl half-time show, the 45-year-old said: ‘It’s great that Jay-Z and the Super Bowl will have me be able to be there to entertain the world.

‘Las Vegas has been amazing for me, having 100 sold-out shows at the residency, and to have the next one be the crescendo – which is the Super Bowl.’

Social media has been filled with fans predicting what set list he might go for, and it seems Usher has seen a few of them.

‘You know, there’s been these fantasy lists that have been going out and people trying to figure out what song I’m going to perform first, middle, last – who’s going to come on the stage with me.’

Throughout his career, Usher has collaborated with many stars including Justin Bieber and Alicia Keys, and there has been some speculation that they may join him during the 13-minute set.

‘What I did is, I was very mindful of my past, celebrating my present, which is here in Las Vegas, and thinking about where we’re headed in the future,’ he explained.

‘What songs do I feel people know me for? What songs have been a celebration of all of the journey of what life and love and emotion has been offered in my music? That was the idea.

‘I thought about a few moments that was special in dance. I thought about some things that I had created here in Las Vegas – skating and doing things that I had not done on stage up until this point, to be able to share that with the world.’

Never one to rest on his laurels, Usher, who almost injured himself when he appeared as a guest from Black Eyed Peas at thee 2011 Super Bowl, will be releasing his ninth album on Friday ahead of the show – before embarking on a US tour.
