New York Fashion Week’s most awkward model wardrobe malfunctions, from runway nip slips to Gigi Hadid’s lopsided issue
NEW York Fashion Week is the place where everyone sets their eyes on the latest and greatest looks.
Though designers can only hope that NYFW goes flawlessly, it’s had its fair share of malfunctions throughout the years, including many nip slips and an error that left supermodel Gigi Hadid lopsided.

GIGI HADID: THE SHOW MUST GO ON
Gigi Hadid is a bit of an expert when it comes to heel-ish problems.
During the 2017 Anna Sui show, the model had to think fast on her feet when one of her shoes came off.
She took the malfunction in stride, walking with just one heel on, and even pulled off a heartwarming finale when her sister Bella helped her finish her way down the catwalk.
Gigi’s wardrobe issues haven’t been limited to the catwalks of New York.
During Milan Fashion Week in 2016, the supermodel had a much more risqué “oops” at Versacele’s Fall 2016 show.
People thought Gigi was making a fashion statement when she walked down the Marc Jacobs Spring 2020 catwalk, this time barefoot.
Her stylist Katie Grand revealed in an Instagram post that the model made the best of a bad situation when the heel on her white mules broke off.
Although Gigi originally sported silver knee-high socks and heels to go with her outfit, she quickly ditched the socks and shoes.
“If you see images from the first passage, she has thigh-high silver socks and white leather mules,” Katie explained.
“Since we were at the other end of the armoury there wasn’t much we could do other than either fake a nonbroken heel or rip off her socks and shoes and send her out barefoot, which we did, and was all the more natural for it.”
Wearing a low-cut little black number, she suffered an unfortunate nip slip when her entire right breast slipped out.
“It was literally the longest runway I have ever seen at a fashion show ever, and she had to walk half of it with her boob out,” a witness said.
Despite the setback, the model kept her head up high and powered through, earning a high-five from Donatella Versace herself after the show.

Later, Gigi laughed the embarrassing moment off, choosing to focus on the real star of the night.
“[Wardrobe] malfunctions happen on the runway every day of FW & are…unfortunate, lol, but let’s talk instead about the new VERSACE CHOKERS,” she tweeted.

TWICE THE NIP SLIPS
Several models also had blunders at the 2017 GCDS Fashion Show.
While the star of the show, Teyana Taylor, stole the affections of the night in a white crop top and logo briefs without any issues, her peers were not so lucky.
Several models gave bystanders a little something extra when their breasts popped out of their low-cut tops.
While one was luckily wearing pasties, another in a similar top forged onwards with her boobs out.

Ella Emhoff, Vice President Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter, bared it all at the United Nations Plaza during the S/S 2022 Prabal Gurung fashion show in a revealing mint top and leather skirt.
Although one half of the top was wrapped securely around her chest, the other was left dangling, resulting in a nip slip as she sauntered down the catwalk.
Whether the incident was intentional or otherwise is up for interpretation.
Gurung explained that the collection of daring and bright colors was in dedication to those who felt like outsiders who were “often watched and monitored, scrutinized but unseen.”

A DUCT TAPE BLUNDER
It might seem like a given that a model wearing only black duct tape had a wardrobe malfunction, but it wasn’t where you might think.
Leah Postol’s high heels failed her as she walked the Black Tape Project show, much to everyone’s surprise.
“Probably our most provocative show ever. This show was an act of rebellion during NYFW,” Joel Alvarez, Black Tape Project’s creator, wrote on Instagram.
“I’m no designer. I’m an artist. I’m here to make you feel some type of way.”
As Postol confidently walked down the set with only a few pieces of tape covering her chest, arms, thighs, and private areas, the strap on her right heel split open.
The show, however, had to go on.
A moment of hesitation could’ve proven disastrous and resulted in a fall, but Leah managed to not miss a single step in her tread and finished without a hitch.

A model promoting Edun, the pair’s ethical fashion line, faced a boob blunder as she walked down in a red gown with a plunging neckline.
Like her peers, the professional kept the show on the road and finished without hesitation.
The early wardrobe malfunction may call into question Edun’s “Ready-to-Wear Collection” claims but luckily, there were no other surprises for the rest of the show.

She finished her walk with no other issues, unfazed and her dignity recovered despite the slight setback.

Recovery is everything when it comes to being a model and Alisar Ailabouni has got it down pat.
The pro sported a chic black two-piece in the Spring 2017 Christian Siriano show, along with large statement earrings.
As she made the corner turn on the runway, Alisar swiftly caught a falling earring without missing a single step.
Siriano posted the moment to his Instagram, impressed with her great catch.
“When a model is so professional that her earring drops on our Spring/Summer 2017 runway and she doesn’t even miss a beat!” he wrote.
