A new rumour suggests FIFA is working with Take-Two subsidiary 2K Games on a football rival to EA Sports FC.

After EA gave up the FIFA licence back in 2022, there’s been no official word on which studio will partner with the football organisation on future titles.

As noted in a press release at the time, FIFA said it ‘intends to work with a range of partners’, instead of just one publisher, on games moving forward. The organisation also said it is ‘engaging with leading game publishers, media companies and investors in regard to the development of a major new FIFA simulation football game title for 2024’.

While we’ve heard nothing since about this 2024 title, a new rumour suggests it could be from Take-Two subsidiary 2K Games, who are known for annual sports games like NBA 2K and WWE 2K.

The post comes from noted leaker Kurakasis, who teased the collaboration on Twitter, writing: ‘My favourite FIFA game. 2K2, oops, 2002 FIFA World Cup.’

While the post itself is light on the details, Kurakasis has a reputable track record. Recently, they leaked the existence of Metro Awakening VR ahead of its announcement at Sony’s State Of Play.

Take-Two has already discussed the idea of taking on the FIFA branding, and didn’t rule out the possibility.

In an IGN interview from 2022, the publisher’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, said: ‘We’re definitely interested in expanding our opportunities in sports, and FIFA has a great brand and incredible clout, but we have no current plans to discuss.’

If a FIFA title is planned for this year, it’s likely the announcement of a new partnership will happen over the coming months.

EA lost the FIFA licence after refusing to pay the organisation a reported $1 billion, which led to past FIFA games being delisted from stores.

As EA Sports FC has proven though, the official FIFA licence makes very little difference, beyond the name and the World Cup licence. All the clubs and players have to be licensed separately, which is hugely expensive on top of whatever FIFA will charge.
