Lorraine host Ranvir Singh is in hot water after she dismissed the idea of going to libraries as old fashioned.

The TV personality stepped in for Lorraine Kelly on Monday’s episode, where she chatted with former The Wanted star Jay McGuiness about his new novel.

Blood Flowers is the first in a planned trilogy by the musician, actor and now author, with Ranvir suitably impressed that he had ‘found the time’ in his busy schedule.

When Jay mentioned that he would go to the library to work on his book, Ranvir scoffed, laughed and said: ‘The library!

‘You’re such an old school soul. Who goes to the library anymore?’

Well it turns out plenty of people do — and they were not forgiving.

Offended viewers took to X to share their annoyance at Ranvir’s words, calling it a ‘shame’ she spoke with such ‘disdain’ about the free community spaces.

The Bookshop Dog wrote: ‘What a shame. Ranvir Singh on @lorraine saying with such disdain to Jay McGuiness “who goes to the library anymore?!” as he discussed writing his book. Libraries are essential places in communities. Not everyone can afford to buy books Ranvir and they are free warm spaces for all.’

User Georgiecat2012 agreed: ‘Ranvir Singh on Lorraine this morning has just laughed at someone saying he goes to the library, saying “Who goes to the library any more?” Well, I do and I know lots of others who do. They are a really valuable part of our community. What a stupid thing to say.’

Libraries, as well as providing books, movies, audiobooks and more completely free of charge, often also have computers for free use, giving internet access to people who may otherwise be isolated from the online world, and also provide a community hub with classes, meet-ups and events, combatting loneliness.

Lesley Hunter pointed out Ranvir made the comment at a time when ‘councils are closing local libraries down! These are essential and underused facilities for not only book lending, but cost effective printing and classes for preschool children.’

Lorraine Clarke wrote angrily: ‘It’s people like you dissing the libraries that make people reluctant to go,’ while Fibro Jayne added: ‘I’ll tell you who goes to the library Ranvir shall I?? People who can’t afford to heat their homes and go there to keep warm. Those who are on the breadline and visit the food bank there. Such an ignorant question from someone so privileged.’

A 2022 report that a quarter of children in the UK had never been to a library, and that 55% are put off going due to the need to be silent while there.

The National Literacy Trust have previously found that if all children in the UK read for pleasure on a near daily basis, the number getting five good GCSE results could increase by 1.1 million in a generation.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
