Welcome to Easter 2024, a time when you can buy a bag of Cadbury’s Mini Eggs for just short of £20.

A 1kg stash of Mini Eggs could be yours for £17.50. That’s right. Your eyes have not deceived you.

It gets worse, as the aforementioned Mini Eggs were marketed as one of the store’s ‘best offers’. Gulp.

Thank broadcaster and Strictly star Dan Walker, 46, for bringing this to our attention, as he took to social media with a picture of the chocolate in store, and captioned it with: ‘What has happening to us? What did I miss? 🤯 £17.50.’

The revealing snap showed the tempting treat slumped on a shelf with an alluring yellow sticker slapped across its front, promising casual browsers a bargain, and a big red sticker which read: ‘OUR BEST VALUE.’

‘Only £17.50,’ they said, ‘Subject to availability,’ they said. We don’t think there will be much risk of it selling out…

Dan confirmed to Metro.co.uk the shop responsible for this grotesque Easter encounter is none other than WHSmith. Specifically, the store in Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Sheffield.

Needless to say, the draw of a cheeky Mini Egg purchase deflated into outrage as fans picked up on the very un-Eastery contents of Dan’s picture.

‘Stop the world, I want to get off,’ wrote user Helen Brearley, while Lizzie Martin quipped: ‘You need a mortgage for a bag of mini eggs these days.’

‘£1.75 per 100g?! That’s shocking,’ chimed in user youandmei, while katebutler said: ‘At that price, I can do my weekly food shop!’

Other 1kg packets of Mini Eggs aren’t far off this extortionate price, with Ocado selling the same product for £13 in a slashed price, reduced from £14.60. Bargain alert!

Meanwhile, direct from Cadbury the same ‘mega giant sharing bag’ is priced at £15.

Mini Eggs are delicious, it is known. But are they that delicious, people?

This comes after shoppers noticed their regular-sized Mini Egg packets have gone up in price.

X user Rowena Coxwell recently pointed out this devastating blow for chocolate lovers everywhere.

‘Having to take out a loan to buy a bag of Mini Eggs wtf are these prices,’ they wrote.

The viral post even warranted a response from confectionary kings Cadbury, as they replied: ‘Hi Rowena, making changes to the price of our products is always a last resort, however, costs across our supply chain have risen steeply.

‘Core ingredients we heavily rely on, like cocoa and sugar are a lot more expensive, while the cost of energy, packaging, and transport also remain high.

‘As a results, we are having to make some carefully considered price increases across our range so we can continue to provide consumers with the brands they love without compromising on taste or quality.’

Yep, Mini Eggs are the latest victim to succumb to the very 2024 trend of shrinkflation.

Their 80g bags have gone up by 25% in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons, increasing from £1 to £1.25, a spike of 25%. Ouchies.

But… £17.50?!
