Fans petrified for favourite TV shows after streaming giant announces axe-Robert Oliver-Entertainment – Metro

What’s Outlander’s future going to look like without Lionsgate Plus? (Picture: Starz)

Streaming service Lionsgate Plus has sent social media into panic after announcing that it will be ending its UK service in just a few days.

The platform, which has been in full operation in the UK for just two years, is home to many popular series, with fans now panicked about where they might be able to watch their favourite shows in the future.

It’s been confirmed that it will be ending on February 29.

Currently available on Lionsgate Plus are shows such as The Spanish Princess, Black Sails, The Act, and Godfather of Harlem, as well as numerous films including La La Land, American Psycho, and Do the Right Thing.

Of principal concern to many of those worried, however, is Outlander – Lionsgate Plus is its UK home

All seven seasons are set to vanish off streaming when it shuts down, leaving its biggest fans in a spin.

‘Oh well, that’s helpful! So what happens now? I get that steaming services are struggling, but once again, the UK fans are getting a raw deal. We support the show just as much as other countries!’ posted X user Lorna.

Another X user, Emerysmummy301, commented: ‘So sorry to hear [Lionsgate Plus is closing down], can I ask what will happen to shows like Outlander?’

Viewer Carole then asked: ‘Do you know what will happen when Lionsgate exits the UK. Should I stop my subscription? Will the programmes be absorbed or go?’

In response, the X account for Lionsgate Plus said it didn’t know where its shows would go, but did promise that fans would receive updates as soon as more information was available.

Fans eager for more Outlander can still find episodes through Amazon Prime Video but will have to purchase individual episodes and individual seasons instead of having them all available in one place.

However, even though episodes of the historical drama series, which is set in 1700s Scotland, will still be available on Amazon, Lionsgate Plus had clarified that they will only be available ‘for a bit longer’.

Jane Sour, an X user, said: ‘An exact date of when Lionsgate is leaving Amazon Prime would be helpful. “A bit longer” tells us nothing. I’d rather not have payment taken for a non-existent platform when it goes.’

The news about Lionsgate Plus’ closure was announced in November 2023 as part of a larger unveiling of Starz’s plans for the future – Lionsgate bought Starz in 2016 but Starz is now planning to separate from its owner as a much larger, more powerful company.

According to reports in Cordbusters: ‘Lionsgate Plus struggled to gain the same traction as larger platforms, such as Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video, which dominate the streaming space [in the UK].’

The upcoming eighth season of Outlander is said to be the last.

Watch Outlander on Lionsgate Plus (until February 29). The series is also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
