An acting legend will play Miranda Priestley in the musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada and fans are losing their minds.

The stage show – based on the hit 2006 film and best-selling 2003 novel – will feature an original score by Sir Elton John and direction and choreography from Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell, who has previously worked on the likes of Kinky Boots, Hairspray, and Legally Blonde.

Heading to Plymouth’s Theatre Royal in July and London’s Dominion Theatre in October, the show follows ‘fresh out of college aspiring journalist Andy, who scores a job at the prestigious Runway magazine working for fashion’s most powerful and terrifying icon — editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly,’ according to its synopsis.

It continues: ‘Sacrificing her personal life to meet Miranda’s impossible demands, Andy finds herself seduced by the glamorous world she once despised. How far will she go to succeed… and will it be worth selling her soul to get what she’s always wanted?’

The blockbuster film saw Anne Hathaway in the role of Andy, while the formidable Meryl Streep starred as Miranda delivering some of the most iconic lines of the noughties.

Naturally, fans’ expectations for Miranda’s casting have been high, and show bosses certainly haven’t disappointed with Ugly Betty icon Vanessa Williams taking the helm.

Speaking about the upcoming role, she said: ‘Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is an absolute dream come true. Gird your loins, folks.’

The singer and actress, 60, is best known for playing Mode boss Wilhelmina Slater in the sitcom Ugly Betty, who could give Miranda a run for her money,

She has also appeared in the likes of Desperate Housewives, Shaft, Eraser, and Daytime Divas.

Fans have been quick to share their elation online with many left ‘screaming and shaking’ over the news.

X user @borjaswift wrote: ‘This is PERFECT casting I’m shaking’, to which the official musical account responded: ‘Of course it’s perfect. It’s Runway after all.’

@chrisgolds added: ‘OMG. I knew it. This is ICONIC.’ with the same musical account replying: ‘We’re so excited… and we don’t get excited.’

@DeanoFennemore wrote: ‘OMFG prefect casting #devilwearspradamusical So glad I took a punt last year and brought opening night tickets for London🎭😱🥰. However, I may need a trip to Plymouth now🤭🤣.’

Others begged for Barbie star America Ferrera to be cast as Andy after she starred alongside Williams as Betty Suarez in Ugly Betty.

@Kelly_Jackson88 asked to be sold ‘every ticket immediately’, while others stated their joy over ‘the return of Wilhemina’.

The show’s social media page confirmed she is scheduled to appear in the role until March 2025.

Speaking to the New York Post at the time, Your Song hitmaker Sir Elton described the show as ‘like seeing a rock concert.’

‘The lyrics are so brilliant because it sounds like I’ve been to enough fashion shows in my life to know that it’s the excitement of when you see something new and you see something great, and you’re there and you can feel the excitement within the crowd and you know that something special has come,’ he continued.

Tickets for The Devil Wears Prada musical in Plymouth and London are on sale now.
