At last night’s SAG Awards 2024 in Los Angeles, Idris Elba got a little bit over-excited at the relaxed rules in regards to swearing.

Usually, the Screen Actors Guild awards show is broadcast on TV, meaning there are strict rules about the use of expletives, but this year the show is airing on Netflix, meaning actors could F and blind as much as they like.

The Luther star, 51, took this change-up as creative licence for his appearance as the first presenter of the night.

Taking to the stage, Idris used the F-bomb and told nominees they can curse as much as they like – but went on to warn people to control themselves, and joked not to say anything they wouldn’t utter in front of Oprah Winfrey.

As the camera panned down to the 70-year-old interview legend looking a bit confused at the statement, Idris exclaimed: ‘F***! That was Oprah.’

Idris also recalled a pretty funny anecdote in front of the star-studded crowd, as he remembered a time he once snuck into Robert De Niro’s offices as a young aspiring actor.

‘When I was just starting out in this business – I was 19 years old – I scammed my way up to Robert De Niro’s office in Tribeca,’ he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Explaining how he used ‘English charm’ to convince the security guard and receptionist he had an appointment with De Niro – really looking to audition for A Bronx Tale – he was eventually kicked out of the office by the Goodfellas actor’s producing partner.

Idris took that as a gesture which meant: ‘Kid, you’re going to go places.’

While Idris is a two-time SAG Award-winner himself, De Niro was nominated at the event for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon.

Disney+ chef comedy drama The Bear and Oppenheimer won big at the awards, hosted at the Shrine Auditorium, as they both took home three gongs.

Starring Jeremy Allen White as dishevelled chef Carmy, The Bear won best ensemble in a comedy series, with the actor winning best male performance in comedy series, and Ayo Edebiri winning best female actor in the same category.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer won best performance by a cast in a motion picture, and also scooped leading actor for Cillian Murphy while Robert Downey Jr. won best supporting actor.

Succession was awarded best drama series ensemble, while Beef earnt Ali Wong best performance by female actor in TV movie or limited series, with Steven Yeun winning the same award for male actors.

Pedro Pascal won the award for best male actor in a drama series for The Last of Us, and Elizabeth Debicki nabbed the best actress in drama series for her portrayal of Princess Diana in The Crown.

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer’s pink box office rival Barbie went home empty-handed after it was nominated for four awards.
