Good Morning Britain star Richard Gaisford was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

The chief correspondent of the ITV morning news show underwent unplanned surgery on Sunday night after presenting to hospital with an infection.

He shared a photo from his hospital bed with fans on Monday night, showing him looking tired but smiling – and heaped praise on the NHS for their ‘amazing care’.

‘Not quite the Sunday I’d planned,’ he joked.

‘Many thanks to the incredible team [at Portsmouth University Hospital] for amazing care and a spot of emergency surgery. NHS at its very best.

‘I realise there are untold pressures at the moment, but the service I received was first class and hugely appreciated.’

Richard was flooded with supportive messages, including from his ITV colleagues; GMB meteorologist Laura Tobin urged him to ‘take care,’ while Lorraine Kelly shared his post and wrote: ‘Hope you are ok.’

On Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley shared their own messages as they announced on-air that the chief correspondent had been hospitalised.

Susanna explained he had been suffering from an infection and ‘antibiotics didn’t deal with it.’

The reporter ‘popped in’ to hospital to check it was going alright, ‘and suddenly he was getting emergency surgery.’

They went on to wish him ‘a swift recovery’.

Richard has worked with GMB for 10 years, joining in 2014, and has previously made headlines when he was forced to take cover when reporting from the ground in Ukraine after Russia’s invasion.

Before joining GMB, he spent 10 years on GMTV, from 2000 to 2010.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITVX.
