Mea Culpa may star Kelly Rowland, but Netflix viewers have absolutely slated it – badly.

The movie is the latest work of US filmmaker Tyler Perry, but despite having such A-list names attached to it, viewers have branded it one of the ‘worst movies ever made’.

With Destiny’s Child icon Kelly as the lead, the flick tells the story of a criminal defense attorney taking on the case of a seductive artist accused of murdering his girlfriend.

But, when burning desire takes hold, things get hot – and dangerous.

The film is filled with steamy scenes between Kelly and her co-actor Trevante Rhodes, who has won several accolades for his performance as Chiron in the Academy Award-winning film Moonlight.

Given the calibre of the cast, fans had high expectations, but reviews have slated it.

Mea Culpa has received a miserable ‘Rotten’ of just 14% on the review website Rotten Tomatoes, at the time of writing.

As for the comments, well, they aren’t glittering.

‘The writing feels like a first draft that was hastily brought to the screen, lacking basic logic, chilling turns, and a decent ending’, writes Brian Orndorf.

Elliott Collins pens: ‘The only way I’ve been able to sit through this movie is to look at it as a comedy, because this can’t be serious. The film is a mess on all fronts but at least it provided some unintentional laughter.’

Other user reviews include comments such as, ‘I just couldn’t finish it’, ‘predictable’, and ‘waste of time’.

The movie was also branded ‘talentless’ with a ‘boring plot’ that is ‘not believable’.

And it isn’t just Rotten Tomatoes where the film has been slated.

In a two-star review for The Guardian, critic Benjamin Lee also slammed it.

He wrote: ‘As one might have guessed from the plot description, it’s hopelessly overstacked, Perry’s poor actors stumbling over absurdly soapy dialogue, needlessly busying something that required a lot more focus to work.

‘While it might start out as an erotic thriller, it slows down to a damp relationship drama before meandering its way to a climax hinged on head-scratching twists that make little to zero sense.’

It’s not all bad, though, so don’t fret if you did enjoy the film and are feeling alone.

Social media reviews have been largely positive, praising Kelly’s acting skills especially.

‘Let’s not let the script distract you from the fact that Kelly Rowland did such an amazing job! I would love to see her beautiful face more in movies!’, wrote X user expensivebadone.

‘kelly rowland carried this damn movie’, posted blondeovo.

The Bootylicious hitmaker and the rest of the cast – comprising Sean Sagar, Nick Sagar, Shannon Thornton, and RonReaco Lee – have all spoken highly of the filming process during press.

Creator Tyler has also been singing their praises, saying of Kelly’s casting to MovieWeb: ‘I just had to get over Kelly’s beauty first. I’ve known her for a long time. It’s really, really hard to not stare at her because she’s so stunningly gorgeous — make-up, no make-up, bad hair, good hair. She’s just a beautiful girl.

‘And to have her and Trevante, who had so much chemistry… So to see them have this kind of chemistry on-screen and deliver the way they did, I think audiences are going to be really shocked and enjoy this thrill ride.’

Mea Culpa is streaming now on Netflix.
