JK Rowling has criticised Sky News for how they referred to the murderer Scarlet Blake.

During a news report, Kamali Melbourne broke the news that she’d been arrested.

‘A woman has been found guilty of murdering an individual in Oxford, months after she filmed herself killing a cat,’ he told viewers.

A clip of the broadcast was shared on the news channel’s X page, and re-posted by Harry Potter author Rowling, who criticised them for not stating that Blake was transgender in the 55-second clip of the show.

The 58-year-old wrote: ‘I’m so sick of this shit. This is not a woman. These are #NotOurCrimes.’

Blake, 25, live streamed torturing and killing a cat before going on to murder stranger Jorge Martin Carreno as he walked home from a night out in Oxford in July 2021. Blake was inspired by Netflix documentary called Don’t F*** With Cats, which focuses on Luka Magnotta who kills kittens before filming a murder. She has been jailed for at least 24 years.

In response to Rowling’s statement, UK’s most recent Eurovision entrant Mae Muller accused Rowling of transphobia and asked her to have perspective.

‘This woman put a cat in a blender and your first reaction is to be transphobic joanne babes have a day off,’ she wrote.

Rowling has been vocal in her thoughts about how sex should be defined and even stated that she’d rather go to jail than change her mind.

She often uses social media to make her opinions known. In October, she shared a post that said: ‘Repeat after us: trans women are women’, with a caption that said, ‘No’.

In 2020, she wrote a statement on her website that said: ‘When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman… you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside’.

Celebrities have spoken out publicly against Rowling including stars of the Harry Potter franchise – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

‘Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are,’ Emma previously wrote.

While Daniel has stated: ‘Transgender women are women.’
