People are only just realising a part of their coats needs to be snipped off… after walking around with them for years
FASHIONISTAS are only just discovering there’s a hidden part of their winter coats and blazers that needs to be cut off – and no, it’s not the price tag.
With the temperatures dropping once again, most of us are reaching for our winter coats – but did you know there’s a teeny detail that tends to go unnoticed by many style lovers?

Not just that, but turns out this mini feature also needs to be snipped off – and seeing others go about their day with the detail has even been dubbed the ”biggest pet peeve” for some fashionistas.
We’re talking about that X-shaped stitching at the back of your stylish coat – and even some blazers – which, turns out, is supposed to be removed the second you purchase the garment.
But what purpose does this hidden stich serve – and why should you snip it off?
Well, according to experts, it’s all to do with shopping and ensuring the piece of clothing doesn’t get ruined in the shipping process.
Chatting to the Huffington Post, one guru, Kelsy Parkhouse, a fashion designer and founder of Carleen, explained: “The X stitch, often in a contrasting thread, is solely for packing purposes, to ensure that a vent or slit in a garment that has been carefully pressed in place does not become flipped up or creased in transit from the factory to the consumer.”
Another fact you may have not heard of is that the X stitch even has a special name to it, industry gurus revealed.
“The X stitch on the back of coats, jackets and some skirts and dresses is known as a tacking stitch,” Kara Jubin, founder and creative director of KkCo, said.
“It’s basically a loose ‘tack’ stitch to keep the vent flat and closed to prevent it from folding or wrinkling before it gets to you.”
Once you’ve bought the item, the stitching should go – or at least when you first wear it outdoors.
Whilst you may not notice it – or think that it cutting it off doesn’t make a major difference – designers have said it makes ”the silhouette look odd”, especially when you sit down.
As explained by Hannah LaCava, another menswear fashion pro, back vents are ”supposed to be open because it helps give the garment movement and make you less restricted”.
She also noted that it will compliment your back side, as well as prevent them material from bunching.
Luckily, to ensure you look your best, it also takes just a few seconds to remove the X stitching – and all you need is a pair of scissors.
Simply snip the thread on both sides and pull it out – it should come out pretty easily.
After one fashion lover, only known as Typhène, shared the discovery on TikTok, hundreds of people raced to comments, totally gobsmacked by the news.
One shopper said: ”The coat I bought on Vinted still even had the pockets sewn closed… The girl had worn that coat for 2 years!”
”MAKES ME WANNA SCREAM,” another chimed in.
A third was baffled, writing: ”Literally my BIGGEST pet peeve.
”How do so many people not question why the slit is closed? ”
”I had a blazer that I loved sooo much I used to wear it all the time and I found out after 10 MONTHS of wearing it that it was sewn on the back,” someone else penned.
