This weekend will see Hollywood’s best and brightest gather for the 96th Academy Awards – better known to many as the Oscars and the glitziest night in showbiz.
The annual film awards ceremony is the culmination of the season, following in the footsteps of the likes of the Baftas and the Golden Globes, and will take place this year on Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California.
Nominations were announced back in January, with Oppenheimer leading the charge on 13 in what experts are claiming will finally be director Christopher Nolan’s year.
Poor Things is close behind on 11 and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon has 10 while Barbie is on eight.
All four join the likes of American Fiction, Maestro and the UK’s own The Zone of Interest in the best picture category.
In the acting categories, there’s the likes of hot favourite Cillian Murphy for his cerebral turn as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Paul Giamatti after his hilarious yet heartfelt performance as a grumpy school teacher and Colman Domingo in his breakthrough role as the title character in Rustin.
Carey Mulligan is a leading actress nominee thanks to Maestro, alongside Annette Bening for Nyad, Emma Stone for Poor Things, Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon and Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall.
Headline-grabbing snubs from this year’s Oscars include Greta Gerwig, who helmed the highest-grossing film of 2023 in Barbie, missing out on best director while leading lady Margot Robbie failed to pick up a nod and Academy favourite Leonardo DiCaprio was absent from the leading actor nominations.

When are the Oscars 2024?
The Oscars 2024 will take place on March 10 in California, LA, hosted for a fourth time by Jimmy Kimmel.
The awards ceremony will be televised live on the US channel ABC at the new, slightly earlier time of 4pm Pacific Time (PT), which is 11pm in the UK thanks to Daylight Savings Time kicking in in the US just hours earlier.
In the UK, previous years have seen the ceremony broadcast on the Sky Cinema Oscars channel, via Sky or streaming service NOW.
This year though, the awards ceremony has a new home on ITV, where it will broadcast exclusively, alongside streaming platform ITVX.
Jonathan Ross will be live on ITV at 10:15pm to host the ultimate Oscars party, with special guests and a panel of movie-loving stars.
Before the Oscars ceremony kicks off, viewers can watch the official stream of the Oscars red carpet live show from 9pm, with Good Morning Britain presenter Ross King.
