Lily Gladstone may not have won an Academy Award, but that doesn’t mean Martin Scorsese is any less obsessed with her.
Gladstone, 37, shared a tender moment with the Killers of the Flower Moon director, 81, who’s been outspoken about his admiration for Gladstone, after she missed out on the best actress prize at the 2024 ceremony.
The legendary director was seen consoling the actress, placing a hand on her shoulder and hugging her, in the wake of the announcement that Emma Stone would take home the golden statue for Poor Things.
Footage of the interaction was shared on social media and soon went viral.
Photos also captured the pair together, with Gladstone smiling down at the cinema legend as he emphatically spoke to her, evidently reassuring her after her loss.
Scorsese cast Gladstone opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Killers of the Flower Moon in 2020, launching her to stardom. The film, which was nominated for 10 Oscars, including best actress for Gladstone and best director for Scorsese, recounts the horrifying true story of a plot to murder members of a community of Osage Indians and gain control of their oil-rich land in Oklahoma in the 1920s.

Stone, 35, – who won the award over Gladstone, NYAD’s Annette Bening, Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller, and Maestro’s Carey Mulligan – offered accolades to her competition in her acceptance speech, saying: ‘The women in this category – I share this with you. I am in awe of you. It has been such an honor to be able to do all this together.’
Gladstone joined an all-star group of actors who earned their first-ever Academy Award nominations this year, including Barbie’s America Ferrera, Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy, Rustin’s Colman Domingo, and Oppenheimer’s Emily Blunt.
Many expected Gladstone to take home the Oscar, with some insisting she was snubbed.

@rabat2019 posted to X: ‘Lily Gladstone ROBBED……. What a snub.’
This was echoed by user @patrockandroll, who wrote: ‘ok the Lily Gladstone snub is easily the most egregious I’ve ever seen.’
@spirit___gun wrote: ‘Don’t think I’m ever really gonna get over that Lily Gladstone snub tbh.’
Gladstone, who is of Nez Perce, Blackfeet, Dutch, and Cajun descent, is the first person of Native American ancestry to be nominated for an acting award at the Oscars. She’s previously spoken about the fine line Scorsese had to walk in making Killers of the Flower Moon, given that he’s a white man telling a heavily Native American story.

‘Marty is a titan, but he’s not bigger than history. He’s a major shaper of it though. It’s the tricky nature of a story like this. You have more representation, but coming from somebody who’s not from the community. So you always have to look at it with a different angle. And there’s nothing wrong with that; you just have to be very aware of the film that you’re watching and what lens it was made through,’ Gladstone told Variety.
For his part, Scorsese has been vocal about his admiration for Gladstone: ‘I saw her in Kelly Reichardt’s picture Certain Women, and I couldn’t take my eyes off of her,’ Scorsese wrote in an email to Variety.
‘Lily’s character was quiet, she spoke very little, but she commanded the screen with her presence, with every move, every gesture. There are very few actors around who know how to hold the screen like that, and it was perfect for the character of Mollie.’

Seemingly unable to say enough about Gladstone’s talent, Scorsese also told Vulture, ‘She had a very sharp sense of her own presence before the camera and an extremely unusual trust in simplicity.’
He went on to say, ‘We felt confident that she knew more than us.’
He echoed this sentiment to Time, gushing that she has, ‘a fierceness and serenity at the same time. And it’s encased in this intelligence.’
Despite not taking home the Oscar, Gladstone is obviously a winner in her director’s eyes.
