Director Wes Ball has teased his vision for the upcoming live action Legend Of Zelda movie, stating he wants to ‘fulfil people’s greatest desires’.

While it was somewhat easy to imagine what the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie would end up like, a live action Legend Of Zelda movie seems like a far more challenging prospect.

Nintendo is collaborating with Sony Pictures on the project, which is set to be produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Hollywood producer Ari Arad. Derek Connolly is penning the script, who previously worked on the Jurassic World trilogy and Detective Pikachu.

The only other talent attached so far is director Wes Ball, who is best known for the Maze Runner trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes.

While there’s some justified concern around the talent behind the camera, Ball has stated in a new interview how he’s been thinking about a potential Zelda movie for years.

‘I have this awesome idea,’ Ball said. ‘I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time, of how cool a Zelda movie would be… I want to fulfil people’s greatest desires.’

‘I know it’s important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people and I want it to be a serious movie,’ he added to Total Film. ‘A real movie that can give people an escape.’

Further elaborating on his hopes for the film, Ball said: ‘That’s the thing I want to try to create – it’s got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical.’

The balance in tone is arguably the greatest challenge facing any Zelda adaptation – especially as the games can swing wildly between the supreme silliness of Tingle to freakish nightmare creatures like the Gloom Hands in Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom.

Nintendo is, at least, aware of the ‘extremely high hurdles’ it needs to reach to meet fan expectations with the Zelda movie. The company was heavily involved in The Super Mario Bros. Movie too though, which, while competent, wasn’t exactly a classic, so it might be best to lower expectations either way.

Ball is saying all the right things though, after previously stating he wants to make the Zelda movie like a live action Hayao Miyazaki film.
