Gogglebox star George Gilbey posted a smiling selfie to his social media just days before his death aged 40.

It was confirmed on Wednesday that the Celebrity Big Brother star had died after a freak ‘accident at work’.

Tributes have since been paid, including from Gogglebox fans and Gilbey’s co-star Ricci Guarnaccio.

Police, though not formally naming Gilbey, confirmed they were called to an incident this morning after a man fell from a height and was injured. He died at the scene.

However, just days earlier Gilbey had been active on social media, and shared a grinning selfie on Facebook.

He wore a black hoodie and appeared, according to earlier posts, to have been on his way back from the gym.

Earlier this month, Gilbey celebrated Mother’s Day with some sweet snaps with his mum Linda, who he starred on Gogglebox with.

Sharing a video of adorable pictures of them together over the years, he wrote: ‘Bestie.’

‘Happy Mumma’s Day to all you Mum’s out there,’ he added.

Linda is said to be devastated at the news, with a source telling The Sun: ‘This will hit his family very hard, especially Linda.

‘First, she lost Pete, now her son as well. She is incredibly emotional.

‘George was like her little treasure.’

The family first hit our screens in September 2013 on the Channel 4 series, with Linda and Gilbey alongside his late step-dad Peter, before he went on to appear on Celebrity Big Brother the following year, where he finished in fourth place.

They all returned to Gogglebox in 2016, before Gilbey left two years later and Linda and Pete continued without him until 2020. Pete died in 2021 following a short illness.

Gogglebox airs on Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
