Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has revealed how she has requested a family-friendly version of the series be written into her contract.

Nicola, 37, who plays Lady Penelope Featherington in the raunchy Netflix series, revealed how she demanded a PG cut of the season be especially created… so that her mum can watch too.

Ahead of the third series, the Derry Girls star spoke to SiriusXM Hits 1 about how her contract negotiations with Netflix and production company Shondaland involved this special request.

When questioned on the rumours that she’d asked that a PG cut of the show be created, Nicola said: ‘It’s literally written into my contract. People think I’m saying it as a joke.’

‘I just don’t want to … We grew up Irish Catholic. That’s just not how we vibe,’ she added.

Nicola went on to reveal her mother’s rude awakening when she’d tuned in to the first series of the hit show – which quickly established its naughty nature.

‘When she first saw Bridgerton, she didn’t know it was going to be saucy. And then you get a bottom — Jonathan Bailey’s lovely bottom — about two minutes into the first episode ever,’ Nicola said.

‘And she was like, ‘What is this?’ But then now she thinks it’s fantastic and really funny.’

Nicola’s Lady Penelope will take a more prominent role in the series this year, after being courted by Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton.

Returning to screens in May, the focus on series three is to be on the blooming romance between Lady Penelope and hunky Colin.

Ahead of the eight episodes being released, the streaming service teased viewers with a minute-long clip of a simmering interaction between the pair.

In it, Colin and Lady Penelope gaze lustfully at each other, with Penelope noting: ‘Your eyes are the most remarkable shade of blue.’

‘And yet somehow they shine even brighter when you are kind,’ she continues.

The pair then drop eye contact, as Penelope adds: ‘I might say something like that… if you were a suitor.’

‘Well, that was uh, rather direct,’ Colin responds.

Series three of Bridgerton will air on Netflix in two parts, with the first four episodes coming on May 16, followed by the final four on June 13.

While viewers wait for their Bridgerton fix, fans can catch Nicola in the Channel 4 comedy-drama Big Mood.

The six-part series stars Nicola as Maggie; best friend of Eddie (Lydia West); their friendship is tested by the sudden resurgence of Maggie’s bipolar disorder.

Nicola also stars in the medieval comedy film Seize Them, alongside Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood. Playing rebel Joan and the spoiled Queen Dagan, the pair are almost unrecognisable – with Nicola describing their characters as ‘two absolute s***heads.’

Bridgerton season three will be released in two parts on Netlix. The first will launch on May 16, the second on June 13
