A24 just dropped the first trailer for MaXXXine, the highly anticipated finale of the blood-curdling X trilogy – and fans have noticed an exciting detail that may reveal what the movie has in store.

The new horror film, which hits theatres July 5th, is the sequel to 2022’s X and Pearl, which both starred Mia Goth and were directed by Ti West.

The final instalment of the trilogy will continue to follow the story of Maxine Minx (Goth). In X, Maxine, an aspiring adult film star, faced challenges when Pearl, a resentful former actor, disrupted her aspirations of stardom out of jealousy.

Goth returned in Pearl but this time she played the antagonist from the first movie, exploring the origins of Pearl’s intense envy.

Now, just two years after X’s release, Maxine is back and she’s determined to prove herself in 1980s Los Angeles while the notorious real-life killer dubbed the ‘Night Stalker’ wreaks havoc across the city.

One moment in the trailer particularly captured fans’ attention, as eagle-eyed viewers pointed out that Goth walks past the infamous Bates Motel, the setting for Alfred Hitchcock’s horror classic Psycho.

If you look closely, it seems that Pearl herself is looking out the window of the hotel at Maxine, a chilling detail that seems to indicate more bloodshed to come in the new film.

@TheLostRiverDr1 also shared a screengrab of the window moment, writing: ‘The way my jaw dropped at this moment in the #MaXXXine trailer. Sign me the f*** up.’

The trailer transports viewers into the neon-lit streets of 1985 Los Angeles, with all the grit and sticky glamour of the period on full display. The Night Stalker features heavily in the movie, who was a real life serial killer who was caught in 1986.

How exactly Maxine and the notorious criminal will interact remains to be seen, but if Pearl is also in the movie – as the hidden moment in the trailer seems to indicate – bloodshed is sure to follow.

Fans can barely contain their excitement for the latest installment in the horror franchise, taking to social media to share their excitement.

Many of Goth’s co-stars also feature in the new trailer, including singer Halsey as Maxine’s friend, Michelle Monaghan and Bobby Cannavale as a pair of detectives, Elizabeth Debicki as a casting director, plus appearances by Moses Sumney, Lily Collins, and Giancarlo Esposito.
