EA is ramping up development on the next Battlefield, with a team led by the directors of the Dead Space remake now involved.

Two and half years after its disastrous launch in November 2021, Battlefield 2042 is officially coming to an end.

EA has announced the shooter’s seventh season, which began last month, will be its last. Once the season concludes, Battlefield 2042 will drop the seasonal format but it will still receive some support, with new in-game challenges, events, and modes.

As outlined in the announcement, developers EA and DICE are shifting resources to the next Battlefield, which is expected to come out in October 2025.

‘We know this news may be disappointing,’ Battlefield general manager, Byron Beede, wrote in the post. ‘However, as we looked at what the future of the series required, it became clear it was time for us to shift our resources and focus to be fully dedicated to what comes next.

‘As I’ve mentioned in previous updates, we have an ambitious vision to embrace and unlock the vast potential of the series’ class-based squadplay and immersive, intense battles.’

To achieve this vision, studio EA Motive – who are best known for 2023’s Dead Space remake and Star Wars: Squadrons – are assembling a team to support development on the next Battlefield.

This team is led by the Dead Space remake’s directors, Philippe Ducharme and Roman Campos-Oriola, which doesn’t spell good news for anyone hoping Dead Space 2 might receive the same revamped treatment.

‘Their proven expertise in storytelling, immersive battles and developing on the Frostbite engine uniquely positions them to help advance the vision for Battlefield, led by Vince Zampella and Byron Beede,’ a post by EA Motive reads.

After the commercial failure of Battlefield 2042, EA has made some significant shake-ups behind the scenes for the next instalment. Recently, the company shut down Ridgeline Games, who were working on a single-player campaign for a new Battlefield – with their work set to be completed by Criterion Games.

This comes after EA announced a slew of more general layoffs which impacted 5% of its total workforce and led to the cancellation of various projects – including a Star Wars shooter at Respawn.

While a Dead Space 2 remake might not be on the agenda at EA Motive, the studio confirmed it is still working on its previously announced Iron Man game.

‘In parallel, development continues to move forward on our Iron Man project, led by Olivier Proulx and Ian Frazier,’ the post adds.

‘The team made excellent progress this year, hitting a major internal milestone and laying a robust foundation for the journey ahead. Iron Man is an important priority for Motive, and I’m very proud of the work we’ve accomplished so far.’

As for the next Battlefield, previous rumours suggest it will be set in the modern era and will go ‘back to its roots’, with an emphasis on 64-player matches and a new destruction system.

EA is also believed to be planning several other Battlefield titles, with one being a free-to-play battle royale in a similar vein to Call Of Duty: Warzone.

If the next Battlefield is on track to come out in October 2025 though, as rumours suggest, it’s likely we’ll see something more concrete about it later this year. And probably multiple leaks before that.
