Brits are ditching popular laundry product as clothes are ‘softer without it’ – it’ll save you hundreds of pounds a year

CLEANING fans are ditching a popular laundry product as they believe it “is just adding grease” to your cycles.

And not only do they claim their clothes feel softer without it, they’re saving hundreds of pounds every year.

The product being ditched is fabric softener – with buying a £4 bottle of the stuff every fortnight setting you back £104 a year.

Also known as fabric conditioner, the thick liquid works by coating clothes in a thin layer of conditioning agents to reduce static cling, soften the fibres and leave a nice fragrance.

But it turns out, too much fabric softener can leave grease-like stains on your clothes that are a nightmare to get out.

As a result, a number of Brits are ditching the laundry product and even claim their cycles smell just as fresh without it.

The news comes after cleaning fan Laura Crawford took to Facebook group Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips in search of advice.

She posted a picture of a polo shirt with a grease-like stain on the front.

“Why is my washing coming out like this?!” she asked.

“Every now and then, an item of clothing will have these weird blobs on them that I can’t remove.

“It has ruined a few items for me and I don’t know how or why.

“I use fabric conditioner and surf washing powder in the drawer, nothing in the drum.

“How can I stop this?”

Mrs Hinch fans were quick to claim that fabric softener is the culprit – and some of them revealed they “haven’t used it in years”.

“I gave up using fabric conditioners,” Carola Muller said.

“My laundry is just as nice and soft – and smells great.

“Fabric conditioner really is just adding grease to your laundry.

“I think it’s just a marketing scheme to make us buy things that are not needed.”

“Does it look like grease? If so, it will probably be too much fabric softener,” Lisa Williams added.

“I used to get this all the time.

“I stopped using softener and I’ve not had it since.

“I just use the capsules with softener in.”

If you’re not ready to ditch fabric conditioner altogether, some Brits recommended reducing the amount you’re putting in your laundry cycles.
