Todd Howard has commented on the development of various projects at Bethesda Game Studios, while promising some ‘really good updates’ for Starfield.

The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced way back in 2018, but news about the project has been relatively sparse until very recently.

Last month, Bethesda confirmed the highly-anticipated sequel to Skyrim is playable in an early build, suggesting development is accelerating on the project. Bethesda Game Studios is also in the early stages on Fallout 5, but that isn’t expected to come out until after the still-undated Elder Scrolls 6.

You might think the success of the Fallout TV show, which led to a spike in sales for Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, might lead to a change in priorities at the studio – but executive producer Todd Howard has reaffirmed The Elder Scrolls 6 is still the ‘focus’.

‘I’m going to avoid putting dates on anything,’ Howard said when asked if the plans for Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 could change, based on interest in the show.

‘I’ve learned that the hard way. So obviously, our focus as far as new development right now is Elder Scrolls 6, but that doesn’t mean that we’re not making plans for other things.’

Speaking to IGN, he added: ‘We’re still doing a lot of work, obviously on Fallout 76, and we see the community, so many people, going into that game and kind of rediscovering it and just so happy with where that game is at. It really does, and I mean, this has one of the best communities in all of gaming.

‘Surprisingly, it’s a very, very nice apocalypse, and we’re doing a lot of Starfield work as well. So we have some really good updates that are going to get announced soon for that game. So, a lot going on here.’

Bethesda previously announced the first DLC for Starfield, titled Shattered Space, will be released in 2024. It’s likely we’ll hear more about the DLC at the Xbox Showcase in June, which was confirmed by Microsoft earlier this year.

We might receive an update on The Elder Scrolls 6 there too, but after Microsoft previously said it wouldn’t be out until 2028, there’s a chance it will be kept away from public view for a while yet.

It’s also unclear if it will be an Xbox exclusive, with the company having shifted towards a multiplatform strategy in recent months.

With so many projects on the far horizon, Bethesda is perhaps hoping to ride the positive buzz around the Fallout TV show for some time – with a second season already confirmed to be in the works.
