After becoming one of the breakout hits of the year, Sony is apparently considering bringing Helldivers 2 to the Xbox.
While attention in recent months has been on Xbox’s multiplatform pivot, Sony has experimented with putting PlayStation exclusives on other platforms over the past few years too.
The Last Of Us, God Of War, Returnal and many others have all made their way to PC, with Ghost Of Tsushima being the next PlayStation flagship to make the transition.
Helldivers 2 marked the first time a Sony-published game received a simultaneous launch across PlayStation and PC, with the results being more successful than anyone expected. Now, it seems Sony might be considering expanding the co-op shooter’s reach to Xbox players too.
This rumour comes from Xbox Era’s Nick Baker, who has been proven correct about Fortnite leaks in the past. During the latest episode of the podcast, Baker claims Sony is in ‘very early discussions’ about bringing Helldivers 2 to Xbox.
Baker explained that these talks do not guarantee the game will go multiformat. ‘It doesn’t mean it’s coming,’ he said. ‘I just said there’s very early discussions. What I’ve heard is there’s some very discussions about it. They could all fall to pieces, they might not come to an agreement on something, who the hell knows – I don’t know how this s*** works.
‘I’m just saying that what I’ve heard is that there’s some very early discussions about the possibility of Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox.’
Assuming the information is correct, the mere fact that Sony would consider bringing the game to Xbox is a major change in policy, even if Helldivers 2 isn’t made by an internal first party studio.

Earlier this year, Sony president, and interim chairman of the PlayStation division, Hiroki Totoki said that the company is planning to put more first party games on other platforms in order to boost profits.
He used the phrase ‘multiplatforms’ but at the time it was unclear whether he just meant PC, and he has subsequently never clarified his comments.
Whether it comes to Xbox or not, the success of Helldivers 2 will undoubtedly have an impact on the release strategy of future PlayStation titles – especially as Sony has several other live service games in the works.
