New heartbreaking details have emerged about Steve Dymond’s experience on The Jeremy Kyle Show just days before his death.

It is believed that Dymond, 63, died by suicide after failing a lie detector test on the ITV show in May 2019.

He died of a morphine overdose and a heart problem at his house in Portsmouth, Hampshire.

An inquest is currently ongoing into the circumstances of Dymond’s death in his home county.

At a pre-inquest review today, the Dymond family’s barrister, Rachel Spearing, told the coroner that footage of the episode showed Kyle and two cameramen following Dymond off stage and ‘pushed the lie detector test results in his face.’

The construction worker had taken the test on Jeremy Kyle to prove he had not cheated on his fiancée Jane Callaghan.

Dymond’s episode never aired and shortly after his death, ITV axed the entire show.

The court also heard that Dymond had been ‘booed and heckled’ by the studio audience after the results of the lie detector test were revealed.

When approached by Metro.co.uk, a spokesperson for ITV said: ‘Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Mr Dymond’s family and friends. When we became aware of Mr Dymond’s death, in May 2019, ITV moved quickly to cancel The Jeremy Kyle Show.

‘We won’t make any further comment ahead of the inquest.’

It is thought that Kyle, 58, will give evidence at the full inquest expected to take place between September 3 and 9.

He was previously named a ‘person of interest’ by Hampshire coroner Jason Pegg at the pre-inquest review in 2020.

Pegg explained at the time: ‘This means really, on the face of the papers, that potentially an act or omission on behalf of Jeremy Kyle may have caused or contributed to the death of Steve Dymond.’

The coroner also said that Dymond looked ‘visibly upset’ after learning the results of the lie detector test.

He continued: ‘Jeremy Kyle adopted an approach where he called the deceased a “serial liar”, that he “would not trust him with a chocolate button”; and made a comment: “Has anyone got a shovel?”’

A 2022 Channel 4 documentary revealed Dymond’s text messages to Callaghan, which read: ‘I hope the Jeremy Kyle Show is happy now.

‘They are responsible for what happens now. I hope this makes good ratings for them.

In response to the two-part series titled Death on Daytime, ITV said: ‘The Jeremy Kyle Show was broadcast for 14 years. In that time, more than 20,000 people took part in the show seeking help to resolve relationship issues or to address drug or alcohol related problems.

‘The central purpose of the show was conflict resolution, and the show achieved many positive outcomes where people were able to solve personal problems.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted ITV and Kyle’s reps for comment.
