Former WipEout and Skate developers have established a new studio in Liverpool, which is working on several new games.

Sadly, there hasn’t been a new mainline WipEout game since 2012’s WipEout 2048, but now a range of veterans from the futuristic racer’s original developer Psygnosis have established a new studio called Starlight Games.

Psygnosis, later known as Studio Liverpool, was best known for franchises like WipEout, Lemmings, and Colony Wars. The studio effectively shut down in 2012, with some of its ex-developers now working at Firesprite which was bought by Sony in 2021.

Gary Nichols, who started his career at Psygnosis, and has been at work-for-hire studio Atomicom for the past 20 years, has now launched Starlight Games in Liverpool. The studio is said to be focusing on developing new IP using Unreal Engine 5.

Starlight Games also consists of various other industry veterans, including WipEout co-creator Nick Burcombe and Andy Santos, who co-created Skate, directed Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and worked at Firesprite on VR title Horizon: Call Of The Mountain.

The studio also announced several games in development, including House Of Golf 2, a sequel to Atomicom’s original 2019 Switch title. The sequel is set to be released this summer across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Starlight Games’ design director, Burcombe, is directing a futuristic sports title, with more details set to be revealed ‘in the coming months’. You can check out a teaser video, which promises ‘the future of sports’, below. Maybe something similar to Speedball?

A separate ‘strategy sci-fi roguelite action experience’ is also in the works, while a team led by the studio’s young talent is developing several Fortnite experiences. The first, Jungle Jam, is set to be released at the end of this month.

While WipEout 2048 was technically the last mainline entry in the series, a remaster compilation, Wipeout Omega Collection, was released in 2017 for the PlayStation 4. It was the first title in the series not to be developed by Studio Liverpool.

It’s likely we could hear more about Starlight’s upcoming games at Summer Game Fest, which is set to take place on Friday, June 7.
