Huw Edwards has stepped down from his role at the BBC following an alleged scandal that broke in 2023.
Edwards, 62, announced his resignation from the BBC after 40 years yesterday.
A BBC spokesman said in a statement: ‘Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC. After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors.
‘The BBC has accepted his resignation which it believes will allow all parties to move forward. We don’t believe it appropriate to comment further.’
The news broadcaster has suffered with his mental health for two decades and it is thought that the recent 2023 scandal involving the star was linked to this decision to step down.
The allegations made against the BBC News at 10 presenter suggested that he had paid tens of thousands of pounds to a young person for sexually explicit images. The Metropolitan Police concluded that there wasn’t evidence to suggest a crime had been committed.
The reporter’s wife and children have stood by him during this ordeal. Edwards’ wife, Vicky Flind, even made a statement in July defending her husband and asking for privacy and respect as she spoke about her husband’s ‘serious mental health issues’.

Who is Huw Edwards’ wife?
Edwards has been married to television producer Vicky Flind – who worked on This Week, Peston and Britain’s Next Prime Minister – for many decades. The pair got engaged in 1993 and have been in a relationship for over 30 years.
Per Daily Mail, the pair met in 1991 but didn’t start up a romance until much later when Huw decided to step in for a mutual friend on a ski trip.
‘We turned up at Gatwick to find our flight was delayed for 14 hours,’ Edwards recalled. ‘We started talking then and haven’t ever really stopped.’
The pair now live in Dulwich in South London and their children are all adults.

Do they have children?
The couple have five children together. Three sons named Dan, Sammy and Amos, and two daughters, Hannah and Rebecca.
In an interview with The Guardian, Edwards spoke about his children and passed on the advice he learned after raising five kids.
‘There’s a principle that your youngest child gets a far better crack of the whip than your eldest. All your anxieties and inexperience and cluelessness as a parent are taken out on your eldest child.
‘By the time you get to your youngest, in my case number five, you’re a brilliant parent. So if you could give a parent all the patience and knowledge that they would have with their second or third child or whatever to the first, that’s the one piece of advice I’d give.’

Why did Huw Edwards leave the BBC?
On July 7, The Sun published the first claim that an unnamed BBC presenter paid a teenager for sexual images. The mother of the teenager said they saw a photo of the presenter in their underwear on the child’s phone. This then led a family member to make a complaint to the BBC.
On July 12, 2023, Edwards was named as the BBC presenter who was accused of paying £35,000 for sexually explicit images from a teenager.
The presenter was then suspended from the BBC and has remained out of the spotlight since.

In February 2024, the parents of the teen at the centre of the row spoke out against the BBC saying that the scandal had ruined their lives.
Earlier in April it was revealed that almost eight months after his last TV appearance, the BBC presenter was still earning a six figure salary.
On April 22, just weeks after this salary news broke, it was then announced that the presenter would be stepping down permanently on ‘medical advice.’
Although the exact medical reasons haven’t been confirmed, it is most likely related to the mental health concerns that have been expressed by his family on several occasions.
