New details have emerged about Assassin’s Creed Hexe, which appears to be set during the witch trials in 16th century Germany.

While last year’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage was purposefully a smaller and more straightforward game, Ubisoft has big plans for the future of the franchise, with multiple titles planned for its upcoming Infinity hub platform.

The next entry in the series is codenamed Assassin’s Creed Red, and is set in Japan, which is expected to come out later this year. Beyond that, there’s a mobile game titled Assassin’s Creed Jade, a standalone multiplayer spin-off, and Assassin’s Creed Hexe – which is also just a codename.

A new report has seemingly unearthed details on the latter, which is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal and was previously described as a ‘very different type of Assassin’s Creed game’ by series executive producer Marc-Alexis Côté.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe, as alluded to in a teaser trailer from 2022, is believed to be set during the witch trials in 16th century Germany.

According to Insider Gaming, Hexe will be a ‘more linear experience’ with ‘elements of open world exploration’ akin to earlier titles in the series, presumably before it leant into role-playing mechanics in Assassin’s Creed Origins.

The game is said to revolve around a single female protagonist named Elsa, who has supernatural abilities. According to footage seen by the outlet, one of these abilities includes possessing a cat, which players can then control to distract nearby soldiers by knocking over glass bottles.

Hexe will also apparently bring back the fear system from Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s Jack the Ripper DLC, which allowed players to instil fear into enemies by using certain techniques or items, causing them to run away or kill others in a panic.

According to the report, Hexe is still in the ‘relatively early stages of development’ and is expected to be released in 2026, on the Infinity platform.

Although Mirage was relatively successful it was only ever intended as a smaller release between bigger titles, which makes it difficult to know what to expect from Red, Hexe, and the other upcoming games.

Ubisoft has shown nothing of any of them, or Assassin’s Creed Infinity, and it’s still unclear as to what degree they will continue to use the role-playing elements introduced with Origins or retreat to the straight action adventure gameplay of Mirage and the earlier games.

It’s very likely we’ll hear more about future Assassin’s Creed titles at the upcoming Ubisoft Forward presentation, which is set to take place on June 10, 2024.
