Some in-game graffiti in Stellar Blade is set to be removed in a day one patch, after apparently including a racial slur.
While much of the conversation around Stellar Blade has centred around the appearance of the lead character, some ‘unintentional’ graffiti might temporarily steal the spotlight.
In the review build of developer Shift Up’s action game, two pieces of art have been placed side-by-side which, together, reference racist language.
The two art pieces are the ‘R Shop’ sign, which refers to the in-game character Roxanne, and the ‘Hard’ graffiti, which can be found in various areas throughout Stellar Blade. The term ‘hard R’ is often used in connection to the N-word.
In a statement, Sony has described the art placement as ‘unintentional’ and said it would be removed as part of Stellar Blade’s day one patch.
‘The placement of two graphics near each other in Stellar Blade resulted in an unintentional objectionable phrase,’ PlayStation’s statement to IGN reads. ‘Shift Up had no intention of creating offensive artwork and will be replacing the graffiti for the day one patch.’
Sony further clarified that the artwork will be removed in the same patch for those who purchase the physical version.
Stellar Blade is PlayStation 5 exclusive published by Sony. It is the debut game from Korean studio Shift Up, which was founded by Kim Hyung-tae.
