It’s a comfortable number one in the streamer’s global top 10.

The most popular film on Netflix this week has been viewed over a whopping 21million times with the streaming platform revealing Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is riding high.

Despite mixed reviews from critics for the sequel, as well as the first Rebel Moon film in the series – A Child of Fire – which dropped in December, it doesn’t appear to have put a dent in viewership.

Zack Snyder’s Star Wars-inspired space opera follows Kora (Sofia Boutella), a former Imperium soldier living in a peaceful settlement on the edge of a distant moon, which finds itself threatened by a tyrannical ruling force – from whom she is hiding.

According to Netflix’s site Tudum, Rebel Moon 2 is comfortably ahead in this week’s global top 10, after less than a week on the streaming platform, with 21,400,000 views of the movie clocked internationally.

This is extrapolated pretty easily from 44.2m hours of the film having been viewed, with it running at two hours and four minutes.

Even more impressively, the data was collected for the week between April 15 and April 21.

Given that The Scargiver was released last Friday, April 19, it shot straight to the top and over 20m views on three days of release alone.

Snyder also previously revealed that Netflix’s calculations are often based on the assumption that each hour viewed accounts for two people watching together, so they may argue that 43m people have actually watched the sci-fi epic.

In second place is animated movie Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp, on an impressive 18,800,000 views, while other films on the Netflix streaming chart include crime documentary What Jennifer Did, 2019 thriller Anna with Sasha Luss, Cillian Murphy and Luke Evans, Hotel Transylvania and Millie Bobby Brown’s dragon film Damsel.

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is also in fifth, no doubt boosted by the sequel’s release, with a further 5.5m views.

So that’s nearly 27m views for fimmaker Snyder in just six days on the platform.

In a recent interview with Metro.co.uk, Snyder acknowledged his polarising reputation as a director and the intense debate his films – which also include 300, Sucker Punch and Justice League – seem to spark.

‘The reactions to my movies tend to really be these big… overreactions,’ he commented.

‘We were talking about even just [with] Rebel Moon – Part One. I’m like, it’s not that controversial of a movie,’ he adds of the criticism that filled column inches and social media forums last year.

‘A lot of people have this crazy reaction to it. And I’m just like, “I don’t get it! I don’t get that reaction.” So yeah, I just think that in the zeitgeist, I’ve just found this weirdo spot, you know, and it is what it is. I’m not mad about it, but it just is what it is.’

For a filmmaker who has ardent fans, however, they – and likely Netflix, given this news – will be looking forward to the ‘more violent and insane’ R-rated director’s cut versions Synder has teased for later this summer.

He also has Rebel Moon 3 seemingly mostly written, as well as scope for more from the franchise – although nothing is yet confirmed.

Once they have ‘a complete picture’ of how the franchise has performed with fans, with this as a first taste of that, ‘we are absolutely prepared to make more of these movies’, he promises.

‘From a story standpoint, there’s plenty more to do,’ he has also shared, hinting that this could stretch beyond to a Rebel Moon 4, and maybe even further.

‘We were talking about if you made another Rebel Moon movie, would the audience be like, “Well, don’t we get two? Because I think we always – it seems like we always should get two of these movies? Whenever you make a movie it should be two, because, otherwise, what, we’re gonna make one? You’re going back to one? That’s weird.” So, these are the kinds of things we’re talking about!’

Rebel Moon Part One and Two are both streaming on Netflix now.
