An online role-playing game based on Game Of Thrones is apparently in the works at Korean publisher Nexon.
While Game Of Thrones might seem like the perfect IP for a video game adaptation, given its fantasy setting and central premise, its history within the medium has been tepid at best.
The best known adaptation was Telltale’s Game Of Thrones in 2014, which was an episodic, narrative-driven adventure based on player choices. After mixed reviews from critics, the planned second season was cancelled when Telltale closed down in 2018.
There have been plenty of mobile spin-offs, and a forgotten Xbox 360 title, but now it’s rumoured that George R. R. Martin’s creation is getting the massively multiplayer online treatment.
According to a report on The Witcher fansite Redanian Intelligence, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game is set in the North of Westeros, with both Winterfell (where House Stark resides) and The Wall set to feature, but ‘other kingdoms are possible as well’.
It’s claimed the title is set, timeline-wise, around season four and five of the TV series, when Roose Bolton is the Warden of the North and Jon Snow is part of the Night’s Watch (i.e. just as the show was on the turn). It’s said players will meet these and other characters in the game, albeit with a new voice cast.
According to the report, players will choose either a male or female protagonist, with the one you don’t select still involved in the game’s narrative in some capacity, akin to Mass Effect: Andromeda.
The project is said to be in the works at Nexon, but it’s unclear whether it’s being developed internally or by another studio. Nexon recently published free-to-play shooter The Finals by developer Embark Studios, but it has also created games itself, including MMO MapleStory.

While an IP as large as Game Of Thrones seems like an odd fit for Nexon, the world of Westeros feels like a perfect match for an multiplayer role-playing title.
If it wasn’t for the final season’s poor reception we’d probably have been inundated by console tie-ins by now, but its poor reputation seems to have put off most big name publishers, with the well received House Of The Dragon not receiving any adaptations so far.
We’ll just have to see though whether this alleged MMO does materialise, and if it can turn the tide on the franchise’s gaming history.
