Some players have apparently received refunds for digital copies of Stellar Blade based on complaints of false advertising.
Stellar Blade might be a great action game but, predictably, the number one topic of discussion with the game is the design of the lead character.
EVE’s revealing outfits have now become the focus of a petition, which claims content seen in the early trailers has been censored in the final version.
The Change.org petition entitled ‘Free Stellar Blade’, which has amassed over 46,000 signatures at time of writing, reads: ‘The content has been censored from the original trailer version posted by Sony. We, as gamers, want this content back. We relied on it, we made the game the #1 pre-order worldwide because of it, and this is the game we want.’
The petition’s organiser, Mark Kern, goes onto claim Stellar Blade is a ‘cultural beacon for freedom of expression in a time when game publishers like Sony are censoring games more than ever’.
No, really. He said that, we’re not making that up.
The so-called issue revolves around the changes in a swimsuit outfit between a patch-free disc version of the game and the final release, with the latter adding some coverage to the chest and hips not seen in an earlier version.
Developer Shift Up has acknowledged the outfit change in an interview, where it was confirmed to be a redesign by the team. ‘The final costume that we wanted to show you is indeed the costume in version 1.0.0.2,’ the devs said in a clip. ‘I want to clarify that is our final product.’
They added: ‘However I know this answer is not enough to convince our user. There is an internal discussion ongoing regarding this, so I think we’ll have a chance to answer it soon.’
Before it was released last week, Shift Up advertised Stellar Blade as being ‘uncensored’ in all regions. While this was a statement in relation to Japan’s restrictive ratings board (which was more upset at the excessive gore but still didn’t end up censoring anything from the international vesion) some players appear to have conflated this message with these small costume changes.
According to a Reddit post by Asmongold, this has led some players to receive a refund from Sony based on false advertising. It’s unclear though if this is a widespread policy.

Even if this obsession with an in-game character’s outfit wasn’t bizarre enough, the argument is incredibly silly considering the amount of revealing outfits in Stellar Blade already, including one where she’s basically just wearing lingerie.
Stellar Blade was recently updated with a New Game+ mode, along with a bunch of new outfits for EVE, Adam and Lily. That suggests that more may be added later as well.
