Craig Revel Horwood has revealed he underwent surgery to have his toes flattened after ‘wearing high heels all my life’.

The Strictly Come Dancing star, 59, has been a judge on the hit BBC dancing series since it hit screens in 2004.

He began dancing as a child, going on to work on several West End productions, as well as also appearing on The Masked Dancer and will next hit the stage again in a production of The Wizard of Oz.

However, he’s now had to go under the knife after dancing in heels left him with ‘nasty bunions’.

During an appearance on Ireland’s Late Late Show on Friday, he told host Patrick Kielty about the injury before showing off the orthopaedic shoes he now has to wear.

Lifting his pair of flared trousers up and putting his feet on the host’s desk, Craig labelled his footwear ‘hideous’.

‘It is a dance injury. My little toes got all squashed up and I had a procedure to flatten them out,’ he explained.

‘It is for dancing as I was getting terrible wounds from these nasty bunions, dear.’

He continued: ‘Now I have to wear these cool shoes. I mean, they are pretty hideous, aren’t they? They are not a fashion statement although some people do think they are.

‘Now I have teamed them with a flared trouser, but I still can’t walk in them properly. This is why I had this done five weeks ago so I can slip my beautiful little new toes into a nice pair of stilettos to play the Wicked Witch.’

The professional dancer and judge then shared how the specialist was shocked how Craig had even been able to walk.

‘But I’m a professional dancer, and we are used to being in continuous pain,’ he said.

‘Basically, I had worn out both hip joints from dancing and ballet, and it was made worse by the fact that I have arthritis. My mother suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, but I have osteoarthritis.’

Last year Craig also spoke about suffering a painful injury during a performance in 2013 that left him in ‘crippling’ agony.

Although he initially believed he’d pulled a ligament, he’d actually put his hip out and was eventually told he not only needed a hip replacement but had arthritis.

After putting his body through ‘an enormous amount of stress and strain’, he explained on Good Morning Britain that dancing had been ‘detrimental’ to his body.

The Late Late Show airs on RTE One. Strictly Come Dancing is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
