A second man has been arrested in connection to the death of Gogglebox star George Gilbey, who died aged 40, it’s been reported.

In March, it was announced that Gilbey, who worked as a self-employed electrician and who first appeared on the Channel 4 TV series in 2013, had died in a horrific workplace accident.

Essex Police confirmed that they were called to an incident after a man fell from a height of 80 feet and was injured, before dying at the scene.

In March, it emerged that a different man was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, before being released under investigation.

According to the BBC, Essex Police have now announced that a 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the same charge.

Police officers reportedly said that the second man currently remains in custody, and that a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive is ongoing.

In April, Gilbey’s cause of death was officially confirmed at a short inquest, which was held in Chelmsford.

‘[Gilbey] was working on a roof when he fell through a plastic skylight and landed on the ground below,’ said the coroner’s officer Deborah Frost.

His injuries were ‘consistent with a fall from height’, the post-mortem examination stated, the BBC reported.

Lincoln Brookes, senior coroner on the case, added that proceedings would adjourn for four months at the request of Essex Police.

Following Gilbey’s death, numerous tributes were made by his friends, peers and fans, including fellow Gogglebox stars.

His mother, Linda McGarry, said in a statement that she was ‘devastated’ by her loss.

‘I’m devastated, he was like my best friend,’ she said.

‘He had the best heart in the world. He was generous, funny and kind, with bundles of charm and buckets of personality.

‘He did more in his 40 years than people do in 90 – he’s even had dinner with the Prince of Dubai.’

She continued: ‘He was crazy, but after coming out of showbiz, he couldn’t get his life back together. He just couldn’t get over the death of Pete.’

Gilbey’s stepdad Pete died aged 71 in 2021 shortly after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

McGarry also shared with the Swindon Advertiser that Gilbey had struggled with the news that she had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

‘I have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and George took it worse than me. He was a mummy’s boy,’ she said.

Gilbey was laid to rest a month after his death, with the ceremony taking place at a crematorium near his home in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex.
