Rumours of Xbox exclusive games coming to PlayStation have reignited, with claims that Xbox is transforming itself into a Steam like service.

With the release of Sea Of Thieves on PlayStation 5 this week, there are now four previously Xbox exclusive titles – made by first party Xbox studios – available on PlayStation 5 and, in some cases, Switch. That’s a major change in direction for Xbox but when the prospect was first rumoured it was said to encompass most, if not all, Xbox games.

That’s something Microsoft denied during their multiformat announcement in February, but then immediately left the door open for in a separate interview the same day. Even so, rumours of exclusive games, such as Halo and Forza, coming to PlayStation 5 largely disappeared in subsequent months… and now they’re back.

According to Windows Central writer Jez Corden, all first party Xbox games will be coming to PlayStation in the future, as the Xbox pivots to a more Steam-like brand where Xbox hardware is treated as more of a niche optional extra, like the Steam Deck.

Writing on Discord, as recorded on ResetEra, Corden suggested that, like Steam, future Xbox services will have a focus on affordable prices and sales, and that the next generation Xbox, rumoured to be launching in 2026, will allow you to side-load Steam.

‘I don’t think they expect to ever grow in hardware,’ said Corden, with recent sales figures revealing that the Xbox Series X/S is still being outsold by the seven-year-old Nintendo Switch.

Poor Xbox hardware sales over Christmas, and again in the first quarter of this year, are thought to be the primary catalyst for Microsoft’s new multiformat approach, although officially the current four games (Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Grounded, and Sea Of Thieves) are all that’s been announced.

Recent rumours suggest that Hi-Fi Rush is also coming to Switch but beyond that it’s unclear when exactly Microsoft might release more games on PlayStation, and Corden doesn’t provide any insight on that either.

What makes these new rumours interesting is that Corden not only has proven sources but is known to be a major Xbox fan, lamenting on Discord that: ‘Nobody wanted to give Xbox a chance, so this is what they get with a Sony monopoly.’

The two franchises he mentions specifically, as coming to PlayStation, are Halo and Forza, although he said nothing about exactly which entries and when.

He also didn’t mention Starfield and Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, which in February Xbox boss Phil Spencer specifically said were not coming to PlayStation.

If he’s forced to backtrack on that then it will trigger a new round of outrage from Xbox fans but clearly the four games that have gone multiformat so far are not going to be the last.

Whether there’ll be any new announcement at the Xbox Games Showcase in June is unclear, but fans have already pointed out a tweet from Xbox president Sarah Bond, about the showcase, which features two emoji hearts, one in the green colours of Xbox and the other in the blue of PlayStation.

Bond has a habit of appearing to tweet hints on Twitter, that later turn out to be nothing, but nevertheless Corden commented on the tweet, saying: ‘Everything is going, yo.’

In the same thread, he also expanded on the idea that Xbox consoles will become a niche similar to Steam Deck, while hinting at ‘affordable gaming PCs based on the Xbox’, which he described as ‘Windows Lite for gaming.’
