The lead actor in Starship Troopers is apparently a fan of the many homages in Helldivers 2, and would be open to playing General Brasch.

Live service game Helldivers 2 is the biggest surprise hit of the year so far, becoming one of the best-selling games for Sony ever, after just two months.

However, the setting and tone of the game owns an enormous debt to 1997 movie Starship Troopers, with the bug-like aliens and the depiction of a fascist Earth military being all but identical to Paul Verhoeven’s satirical classic.

Unsurprisingly, Verhoeven hasn’t commented on the similarities but lead actor Casper Van Dien has, in a YouTube video where he’s asked about what he thinks of Helldivers 2 and how it compares to the films.

‘It’s the same thing as in the movie [laughs]. It’s so awesome, I love it,’ Van Dien said, after being shown a clip where characters in the game are acting in a promotional video to recruit new members to Super Earth’s battles in space.

‘You can see that this is definitely a huge tribute to the… look at that uniform, that’s very Starship Troopers-like,’ he added.

Van Dien also noted that the bug aliens in Helldivers 2 are very similar to the ones in the films, as well as all the propaganda videos and messages, the rocket launcher, and the dropships.

He also says he was ‘open to see what happens’ in regards to playing a role in Helldivers 2, maybe as General Brasch in a new cut scene or even a live action adaptation.

‘It’s such a tribute to Starship Troopers, it’s really quite wonderful,’ Van Dien said. Although it’s debatable whether the game is a satire, as most of the time it’s just copying the surface appearance and tone of the movie.

Van Dien gave Helldivers 2 a 10 out of 10, although he wasn’t so keen on the capes. You can watch the full video below.
