Joanna Lumley will be taking on a very important role at Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

The Absolutely Fabulous actress will be announcing exactly who gets our points as the UK Jury spokesperson.

The news was announced on The One Show by commentator Graham Norton, as we build-up to the contest that commences next week.

‘I can’t believe they haven’t done it before,’ Graham teased. Before putting viewers out of suspense, hosts Roman Kemp and Alex Jones provided a drum roll. ‘It will be Joanna Lumley,’ announced Graham. He called the decision ‘perfect’ and we have to agree.

Alex enquired if Joanna might dish out the marks as her character Patsy Stone, and Graham was enthusiastic about this idea. ‘Glass of champagne, fist full of cigarettes, yeah, do it,’ he remarked.

Joanna, 78, said of her role: ‘Good Evening Malmö, it’s Joanna here! I am delighted to be announcing the jury vote for the UK at this year’s Eurovision. It’s such a fabulous honour to give the iconic douze points!’

A National icon, Joanna Lumley was made a Dame (DBE) in 2022 for her services to drama, entertainment and charity.

The model, actor, presenter, producer, and humanitarian is a veteran of the stage and screen, and Joanna’s BAFTA-winning turn as the outrageous, Patsy in BBC Sitcom, Absolutely Fabulous, has won her a multitude of fans from around the world.

In the hit series, her character Patsy is no stranger to Eurovision, as she famously rubbed shoulders with UK Eurovision legend Lulu.

Patsy or no Patsy, the decision to have Joanna in the job has pleased fans. Sam wrote on X: ‘I flipping love her. Great choice.’

‘WHAT. A. BOOKING,’ wrote Chris Lockyear.

Any criticism was quickly shut down (not that there is any) by Matt: ‘Joanna Lumley is THE original mother I will not be accepting any slander.’

It’s been an exciting week of sneak peeks for Eurovision fans, as we were also given our first glimpse at what we can expect from UK entrant Olly Alexander’s performance.

The 33-year-old is set to take to the stage with his song Dizzy at the contest, which will be held in Malmo, Sweden.

In his staging, Olly can be seen dancing and singing inside a big room set on the stage, which is lined with dirty tiles and shower heads.

He is accompanied by four male dancers wearing red boxing gear, with one up against him at one point as Olly leans on a wall.

The 2024 Eurovision grand final will take place on Saturday, May 11, with the semi-finals being held on Tuesday, May 7 and Thursday, May 9.

The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest will be broadcast on the BBC.
