Capcom’s next mainline Resident Evil might be revealed very soon, as an insider claims it’s aiming for release early next year.

This month marks the third anniversary of Resident Evil Village and it seems like Capcom could officially announce the next mainline entry in the series in just a few short weeks.

Nothing has been said officially about the next entry but rumours suggest it will be open world and have ‘the biggest budget’ of any title in the series so far.

While Resident Evil 9 was previously rumoured to be coming out in 2025, renowned leaker AestheticGamer, aka Dusk Golem, has now doubled down on that suggestion – stating the title ‘should be revealed pretty soon and release next year’.

Dusk Golem previously claimed that Resident Evil 9 may have been subject to an internal delay, but now suggests that is no longer the case.

‘I have good news/rumours to deliver on Resident Evil 9,’ they wrote. ‘The possible delay I had heard murmurs about can be pushed aside. Resident Evil 9 should be revealed pretty soon and release next year.

‘If what I heard previously holds true, should be in January. It’ll have had about seven years in dev[elopment].’

The insider, who has a reliable track record when it comes to survival horror games, clarified that the January 2025 date isn’t new information but something they had ‘heard previously’ that the team ‘probably are still aiming for’.

In the same post, Dusk Golem claims Resident Evil 9 began development in early 2018 and that it was being considered as a ‘possible’ Resident Evil 8.

Resident Evil Village, which was in development from 2017, allegedly started out as Resident Evil 8 but then almost became a spin-off title, before it ‘ultimately became Resident Evil 8 again’.

Capcom has historically juggled multiple Resident Evil games at once – between the mainline entries, spin-offs and remakes. The studio is currently believed to be working on five new games, including Resident Evil 9.

While none of this has been confirmed, January 2025 certainly seems possible. There was a four year gap between Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village, so this would follow a similar timeframe. Resident Evil 7 also came out in January 2017, so the developer has some history with releasing a title in that month.

If this is true, it suggests Capcom might reveal the next Resident Evil in one of the upcoming presentations from Microsoft or Sony.

An Xbox showcase is set to take place on June 9, while a PlayStation presentation is rumoured for late May. Alternatively, it may be part of Summer Game Fest on June 7 or Capcom might save it for its own Capcom Showcase – one of which they held last June, at what would previously have been E3 time.

The biggest question for Resident Evil 9 is what direction it’ll take. Resident Evil Village was pitched as a conclusion to Ethan Winters’ story, so we might see an entirely new protagonist, or an old favourite, take the spotlight in the new game.
