Sam Smith turned heads with their latest statement outfit during a royally star-studded event.

The pop icon, 31, was among the guestlist at this year’s King’s Trust Royal Gala alongside the likes of Emily Ratajkowski, Kate Moss, Lionel Richie, and Dominic West.

Never one to shy away from a bold look, the Unholy hitmaker ditched their usual revealing outfits and opted for a maxi leather coat that looked rather a lot like a bin bag.

Cinched at the waist with a matching belt, Sam rocked the oversized coat with a turned up collar and matching black leather heeled boots.

They accessorised with a dangling pearl and gold earring with their moustache finely twirled at the edges.

The New York event was hosted by King’s Trust Global Ambassadors Richie and Edward Enninful OBE to raise funds for the youth charity.

Sam’s appearance at the event comes as the controversial musician has been announced to perform at this year’s BBC Proms.

The Stay With Me artist caused quite a stir last year with devilish performances of their lead single, Unholy ft Kim Petras, which saw the duo hit stages in red and black devil-horned latex outfits in a performance filled with whips, cages, and racy dance moves.

Following the backlash their performance at the 2023 Grammy Awards received, the Proms have been quick to assure fans Sam’s set will be quite different this year.

‘I think what you’ll see is a performance that is entirely appropriate for the Proms and entirely appropriate for the audience in attendance,’ Radio 3 director Sam Jackson said.

Jackson explained the focus would be on Sam and their music, played alongside a unique orchestral arrangement, and that ‘this will be the only opportunity to see Sam Smith in the UK this year.’

‘This is very much a Prom – it’s not Sam Smith at the Royal Albert Hall,’ they concluded. ‘The look and feel will be entirely appropriate for that festival.’

At the time, Sam’s Brit Award performance garnered 106 complaints from Ofcom with Sam at the centre of a social media storm as people dubbed their demonic, fetish-inspired dance as inappropriate and wrong.

Following their wild Grammys show, the Satanic Church felt the need to speak out after the singer was accused of being a satanist and conspiracy theorists went as far to say they performed a satanic ritual onstage.

David Harris, a magister of the Church of Satan, told TMZ that Sam and Petras’s performance was ‘nothing particularly special.’

Petras, who made history as the first trans woman to perform at the Grammy Awards, said how her identity and Sam’s as a non-binary person informed the performance.

‘It’s a take on not being able to choose religion, and not being able to live the way that people might want you to live,’ she told Billboard.

‘I think a lot of people have labelled what I stand for and what Sam stands for as “religiously not cool.” I personally grew up wondering about religion and wanting to be a part of it, but then slowly realizing it doesn’t want me to be a part of it.’
