WWE fans are known for their passion, but the audience in Lyon took things to a potentially damaging level on Friday night.

The sports entertainment giant is in France for this weekend’s Backlash premium live event, and on the eve of that show SmackDown took over the LDLC Arena with a preview of things to come.

The live crowd was off the charts, singing from the arrival of the French announce team – legends to many who grew up watching wrestling in the European country – until Cody Rhodes’ speech after the show went off the air.

Viewers around the world were in awe of the passion, and it turns out the reaction was justified as boss Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque revealed that fans in the building had received a genuine warning about the noise levels.

‘The @WWEUniverse in France literally received a warning about the noise level tonight at #SmackDown @LDLC_Arena. Absolutely insane,’ he wrote alongside a screenshot of someone’s smartwatch with the warning.

Translated from French, it read: ‘Noisy environment. The sound level reaches 100 db. Exposure of just a few minutes at this level can cause temporary hearing loss.’

Not surprisingly, Triple H was proud of the atmosphere, and quoted his friends in Motorhead to praise the fans for the raucous environment they created.

He added: ‘Like @myMotorhead said… “Only way to feel the noise is when it’s good and loud.’

SmackDown ended with Cody Rhodes and AJ Styles facing off 24 hours before they clash in the ring for the American Nightmare’s Undisputed WWE Championship.

The audience roared their approval for both men, with plenty of singing and dancing in the stands, to the point Cody appeared rattled at one point and couldn’t hear what was happening in the ring.

‘I’m hoping that airs in the US just because it was so much fun – never before have I not been able to hear myself or somebody in the ring during an interview 🎤,’ he tweeted. ‘Beautiful #SmackDown’

It was a special night, with the likes of New Catch Republic – the UK’s own Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne – getting huge reactions alongside the likes of Naomi, Bayley, Jey Uso and more.

It’s a big weekend for WWE too, as the show became the highest-grossing SmackDown TV in company history, breaking the recent record set in Philadelphia over WrestleMania weekend.

Tune into Backlash France this evening at 6pm on the WWE Network.
